Yucky Tucker, 12, of Westboro Missouri, won the reserve champion pony class at the Iowa State Fair last week. Tucker has ridden for three years under Richard Huff, Westboro native and Anita high school music director.
About 4,073,076 pounds of surplus foods valued at $795,738.84 were distributed to needy families across 69 counties in the first half of this year, with delivery costs totaling $27,954.86. Cass County alone moved 68,306 pounds valued at $13,091.64, including cheese and staples like flour and corn meal, funded by local distribution costs.
Drake University community college offers two courses at Atlantic High School starting Sept 12. English Grammar and Usage and Games and Physical Activities grant three hours of credit each and meet thirteen times at 6 30 pm with registration at the first class. Other area courses include Elementary School Curriculum Creston and Teaching of Arithmetic at Harlan.
The Anita High School Student Council held its first meeting of the year on August 29 electing Duane Kline president Barry Burke vice president Janet Taylor secretary and Jim Phillips treasurer Faculty adviser Mr Deskin remains. Six cheerleaders were selected for the year including seniors Sue Dressler Janet Taylor and juniors Sharon Gissible Sharon Hamann and sophomores Judy Brownsberger Sue Turner. The marching band of about 40 is preparing for the first home football game with several away engagements to be announced.
Rep. Ben F. Jensen introduced in Washington a plan for a do it yourself farm association to stabilize grain and livestock prices by using grain alcohol in gasoline. Members would pledge to buy a set amount of the alcohol or gasoline already blended with alcohol. Jensen argues grain fueled cars would quickly eliminate surpluses. The idea is backed with Sen. Mundt of South Dakota. a bill would require five percent alcohol in motor fuel from grains. He says Congress has not acted as agriculture committees favor Middle West interests less now. State welfare data show most dependents rely on fathers’ disabilities for certain grants. In 687 families with $250 plus monthly needs only 56.5 percent received that level, 43.5 percent had other income reducing grants. Divorce or legal separation is a major dependency cause in the overall caseload. August aid to dependent children totaled 7,377 families and 26,762 individuals costing $850,094.
The WSCS of Anita Methodist church invites all women teachers and wives to a 6 30 pm covered dish dinner on Thursday at Fellowship Hall. Mothers and daughters of the church are invited. Vocal selections by Carol Hornbuckle and the girls sextet directed by Richard Huff.
The Rev. Hubert Bamford aged 63 and pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church at Panton died Saturday at Fort Dodge Lutheran hospital after a brief illness. His father, the Rev. J. M. Bamford, once was United Evangelical pastor in Anita. Survived by his widow Emily Stone of Cumberland are two daughters and several siblings. Funeral services were held in Panton Tuesday with burial in Cedar Falls.
Cass county's loan rate on 1957 soybeans is 2.06 per bushel, seven cents below last year, based on a national average of 2.09 and 70 percent of parity. Rates for Iowa counties range 2.05 to 2.10, with loans available from harvest to Jan 31.
ten year old Margaret Haszard daughter of Mr and Mrs Bid Haszard has been a patient at Atlantic Memorial hospital since Friday for an asthmatic condition. Doctors hope she can return home in a few days.
A field day at the Western Iowa Experimental Farm near Castana on Sept 26 will present results from a yearlong study of least-time and least-cost beef feed and forage rations. Researchers include Wise Burroughs J M Scholl and Earl O Heady with plots on grain sorghums and farm outlook discussions.
Ruth Harrison won ten dollars in gift certificates at the Anito drawing held after last Saturday night’s game. Other participants in the playoff included Carl Barbour Mrs H J Spies Mrs Gene Klemish Janet Carlson Mrs Elmer Jensen Ella Dorsey Mrs Carl Nieman and Mrs Dale Mueller.
