Tigers and Giants clash in 1946 kittenball final

Sunday at the football field Jim Davis Tigers and Paul Brown Giants battled to a 22 to 20 finish in a tight championship game. Giants edged ahead with key breaks after a hard fought second half. A second game saw farmers beat lone farm boys in a rough match amid postgame chatter.

Virgil Carlson Seeks Diploma Through Navy Credits

Virgil Carlson, 23, recently discharged from four years in the Navy, plans to return to high school to complete his diploma. He needed four credits when he entered service and may qualify for Navy credit to graduate in the next weeks, requiring one full semester of attendance. Carlson served in Iceland, Newfoundland and the Pacific, plus eleven months in Washington, D C.

Lieutenant Cleef Engle Returns From Japan Assignment

Lt Cleef SB Engle of Burling ton returned after a short leave from the diplomatic service in Japan where he served as Military Governor. He expects to be stationed in Rio de Janeiro and has been in the State Department handling economic relations with Mexico and Central America. Engle, a University of Chicago graduate, previously served as Vice Consul to Quitto Ecuador and later entered the navy.

Merle Turner Improves After Hospital Visit

Word from Merle Turner a well known farmer north of Anita says his condition has slightly improved after months of illness. He was rushed to Council Bluffs Hospital earlier this week when another hemorrhage occurred. his wife remains at his bedside.

Graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery conducted by Cohumbia Chapter 6,E.5. Mrs Marsh Millhollin, 82, of Anita, died last Thursday at home of Mrs Elva Millhollin in Massena after a heart attack. She was born March 26, 1864 in Rock Island Illinois and lived in Highland area before marrying Marah Millhollin in 1883. They farmed at Lattig Farm and retired 42 years ago to Anita. She is survived by two daughters Leura Des Moines and Mrs Vernon Mahon, and two sons Homer Anita and Howard Davenport, plus a brother John Dill of Anita and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Coach Donald Louth reports 35 boys answered Tuesday’s call for football practice. Opening session Monday August 26 left many sore as 24 farm boys were unable to attend last week. The squad lists 24 players with readings of local small-town names and minor scheduling notes.

Ted Weaver purchased the 120 acre farm northeast of Anita from Don Kay of Atlantic, possession March 1, price 12000. Lyle and spouse occupy the year. Phil B. Pilmer of Des Moines sold the 200 acre farm to Raymond Kluever of Lincoln Township, possession March 1. G E Kolb of Anita bought Charles Gipple’s Rose Hill property, possession March 1. Kolb sold his East Main street residence to Harold Alleman who will move in. Gipple will move to the office-building room they own.

Four Kuehn Boys Return Home For Sunday Dinner

Last Sunday marked the first time in thirteen years that Mr Henry Kuehn and his four sons gathered for a Sunday dinner. Robert Kuehn, a Navy officer from Quantico, flew to Omaha. Kenneth, Lowell, and Lyle returned from their posts in Ohio and Ames, with Dick Combs of Chicago joining as a guest. Robert left Monday for Cleveland to visit relatives before reporting to Great Lakes Naval Training Center for his next assignment.

Mr and Mrs L L Dorsey and Mr and Mrs John Wheatley mourn the serious accident of their grandson Gary Wheatley five year old son of Mr and Mrs Paul Wheatley Des Moines The child riding with his parents in the auto fell from the moving car onto the pavement fracturing his skull It is believed he reached for the window handle and pulled the door open The Dorseys returned home Wednesday and said he would be unconscious for at least two weeks to learn how serious the injury is
