Anita school announces opening Monday with a new wing and four high school grades. Two new teachers join the local faculty to deliver better education at home. Rural pupils are invited to take advantage of the upgraded facilities, with a full four high school program and accredited courses.
The Rialto Theatre shows San Francisco for three days Friday through Sunday featuring Clark Gable Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy in a drama romance and spectacle set against the 1906 Barbary Coast and earthquake story. Also cash night includes Two-Fisted Gentleman with Jimmy Dunn June Clayworth and boxing action plus local PTA meeting notes.
James Alfred Gant 79 longtime Anita Cass county resident died Tuesday night at his son in law and daughter Clyde and Mrs Gaines Atlantic home after a prolonged illness. Born Cedar Rapids Oct 18 1857 he came to Anita as a child and lived there and in Atlantic. He married Ellen Limerouth in Atlantic March 17 1872 she died 1894. Survived by one daughter four grandchildren two great grandchildren two sisters and two brothers Funeral held Friday at Ro land Peacock Baxter Atlantic with Rev Richard Chambers officiating and burial in Evergreen Anita.
Miss Leitha Dorsey daughter of Mr and Mrs L L Dorsey and Elmer Jensen son of Mr and Mrs Marinus Jensen both of Anita were united in marriage last Saturday afternoon by Rev James D Pearson at his parsonage in Shenandoah Iowa Attendants were Mr and Mrs Leonard Anderson of Atlantic Mrs Anderson a twin sister of the bride The groom is a 1981 Anita high school graduate and the bride graduated from the country school They will have best wishes from their host of friends Meanwhile Frank Lees Jr son of Mr and Mrs Frank Lees was taken to University hospital in Town City for treatment to a bone infection that has troubled him for years
Word reached Anita that Roscoe Currier of Anita Iowa was found dead in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The man, about 40, WW veteran, had identification papers on him and a sister Mrs Vera Worster travels from Keokuk Iowa to identify the body and arrange burial at the National Soldiers Cemetery if confirmed. Currier known as Johnnie and Roscoe lived in Anita most of his life and once operated a cafe with John Ruggles.
The state old age assistance commission will no longer pay many county pension board expenses such as office equipment supplies telephone charges and stamps. It reports 67 170 82 in county administration costs paid since last Feb 13 after a supreme court ruling shifted some costs to the old age pension fund. A state attorney general opinion says the commission may pay only expenses of board members and investigators. County payments listed include Cass 707 15 Adair 459 63 Audubon 205 81 Guthrie 1 089 88 Adams 866 05 Montgomery 540 20 Shelby 521 70 Pottawattamie 1 302 12. Miss Maxine Daughenbaugh returned from Fontanelle after a visit with her uncle Roy Daughenbaugh and family.
Rural schools in Cass county began fall term last Monday per county superintendent Miss Georgia Byrne. A combined meeting for rural teachers at the county courthouse in Atlantic distributed school supplies and listed teachers by township and school number across Grant Lincoln Massena Benton Franklin townships with multiple assignments in Anita Wiota Massena Cumberland Atlantic.
The Misses Janice Scholl and Evelyn Darrow of Cass County win first place at the 4-H achievement show for a canning chicken demonstration. They compete at the state fair in Des Moines this week, with other Cass County 4-H winners also noted in canned products and livestock categories. Five hundred people from Cass and Audubon counties attended the third annual Highland homecoming pageant. The event depicted pioneer days including early explorers, the first post office at Hamlin’s Grove, Civil War recruits, and the building of the current church on July 4, 1874. The pageant, written and directed by Mrs. E S Holton, featured prologues, a mixed chorus, and period costumes. Officers for the coming year and visiting dignitaries from Des Moines, Wapello, California, Bridgewater, and Omaha were noted.
Mrs. Alex Miller reports the state highway safety patrol traveled 2 116 385 miles and spent 163 982 02 in its first year of operation. Salaries were the largest cost at 46 089 15 with patrolmen paid 105 monthly after Aug 1 under the patrol law. Traveling costs reached 48 660 86. equipment and supplies 16 264 65. The force issued 36 926 warnings and 16 728 summonses, assisted 27 989 motorists, and removed 11 737 obstructions. Frank Jensen visited Anita and Benton township residents, noting he was said to be the first white child born in Denton township.
