Enrollment at Anita Community schools for 1965 66 stands at 669, five fewer than last year. The breakdown shows 351 elementary, 108 junior high, and 210 high school students with the third grade at 62 and kindergarten and seniors down slightly. Local figures compare with 1963 64 and 1964 65, noting shifts but overall balance and optimism for future classes.
Funeral services for Mrs Tom Newell will be held at 1 30 p m at Long Funeral Home. The Rev Carroll Robinson will officiate and Mrs Roger Scott will accompany Mrs Harold Smith as she sings In The Garden and The Old Rugged Cross. Interments will be in Audubon cemetery. Mary Jane Newell daughter of Thomas and Lillie Ratledge was born Apr 13 1880 in Audubon county and died Aug 31 at Crestwood Nursing Home after about two weeks residency. She married Thomas Newell July 3 1901 and they farmed in Audubon then moved to Anita and Dedham areas before settling near 1960. Survived by four sons Lester Guthrie Center Jack Atlantic Selmer Anita Joe Anita. five daughters Mrs Alfred Promeroy Dallas Tex Mrs Charles Kluever Audubon Mrs Boyd Stangl Atlantic Mrs Verlon Evans Topeka Kan Mrs Doris Scanlon Omaha. a half sister Goldie Hepp Audubon. 33 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sons Bernard and Ralph.
Five new faculty members join Anita schools this year with four on hand to greet students and Kenneth Miller teaching general math and science. New staff include Mrs. Clyde Newell teaching second grade and Miss Sharon Goff from Kentucky. Mrs. Carolyn Uhlman to first grade. and changes for Janice Peterson becoming Gary Christensen and Elsie Karstens shifting from second to sixth grade. Red Cross Bloodmobile visit planned at Anita Methodist Church Friday with quota of 100 donors and encouragement for all eligible to donate.
Anita High hosts a Friday night scrimmage at 7 30 pm at the AHL grid field featuring a first team against a second team. Booster and athletic clubs seek donations for a new whirlpool to benefit football basketball and track, with tickets and sign at the field. The program includes a Scramble lineup mix and a midsummer film slate at the Anita Theatre.
The Anita Flight Club purchased a red and white Cessena 180 trainer. Delivered Saturday, nine members are taking lessons and Tom McLuen has soloed. The plane will stay at the air strip for now. The club has 23 members and is open for new pilots via Dr. Duane Harris Jens Rasmussen or Junior Karns. News notes include upgrades at the Anita fire station and Crestwood Nursing Home moves for Mrs. Clara Robison. St Mary’s parish chicken supper is Sunday September 6 from 5 to 7 p.m.
A horseshoe tournament schedule was announced for Monday. The event followed a Friday gathering at Mr and Mrs Ben Godhans home, honoring their nephew Cecil Sublett of Adair who departs for London to study music and voice at the Royal Academy of Music.
76 year old retired farmer Martin Olsen was taken to Atlantic Memorial Hospital by Anita Emergency Unit after a few days of illness and is reported to be improving. Meanwhile Anita prepares for a horseshoe pitching tournament at the downtown concert park on Monday September 6 sponsored by the Anita Chamber of Commerce. Qualifying ends Sunday September 5 at 8 p.m.. events include four classes with top prizes and a round robin format. Tournament officials note new courts and strong lighting with Wallace Uhlig as tournament chairman aided by Merle Robison Earl Kaiser and Vince Ehrman.
