Four Cass Teams Exhibit at Iowa State Fair 1985

Cass County sends four 4 H teams to the state fair with two demonstration and two judging teams from boys clubs. Former Massena Boy Receives M.A. Degree

Marian J. Wetternick formerly of Massena earned a master's degree last Thursday from Drake University in Des Moines. He now teaches commercial subjects in Glenwood after growing up on a farm south of Massena and graduating from its high school, where he taught commercial subjects for three years.

Four Reach Postmaster Exam in Apita Test

Four area residents took the permanent Apita postmaster exam on Saturday. Clair Gill Ray Laartz Russell Morgan and Harvey Schall completed the 8 am to 4 pm test at the Atlantic post office. Papers were sent to the Civil Service Commission and results will be released later.

Mrs Max Walker Hurt In Car Wreck Near Brayton

Mrs Max Walker of Rent an ngyr ship suffered severe facial lacerations and bruises Sunday afternoon when the tear she was driving skidded off county road and overturned in a ditch 644 miles north of Brayton after a tire blew out. She is improved after stitches and a blood transfusion. Taken to Atlantic Memorial hospital. Her daughter Connie, riding with her, was treated for shock and bruises and released. The 1954 Dodge was totaled.

Anita Stores Return to Regular Evening Hours

Anita stores, open Tuesday evenings through the summer, will resume their regular hours next Tuesday. An announcement from the Chamber of Commerce is noted elsewhere in this issue. Most Anita businesses plan to close on Labor Day, next Monday.

Cass County Schools Opened Monday With 970 Enrolled

Cass County schools opened with about 970 children and 71 teachers across townships including Grant Benton Franklin Lincoln and Massena. County Supt Warren R Moree announced the figures and listed teachers in each district. A county institute for Cass and Shelby counties’ teachers is set for Sept 22 in Atlantic under the state department of public instruction.

Cass Woman Wins $600 From Cashword Cal

Mrs Howard Sui of the south edge of Victoria township eight miles east of Massena won the $600 Des Moines Register Cashword Contest jackpot Sunday. There were 102,724 entries and her entry matched Cashword Cal’s. Mrs Smith is 25 years old and she and her husband have five children.

Polio Shots To Be Given In Cass County

Anita school announces second and third graders who had the first Salk shot will receive the second dose on Tuesday September 13 at Atlantic. Students from the Anita area who were in the first and second grades when they got the first shot are scheduled for the second dose.

Anita School Faces Crowding as Enrolment Surges

Anita Public School reports 424 registered students this Monday, up 15 from last year, with crowded classes split into two sections where possible. Superintendent Glen C. Hornsuckle asks for patience as buses run long routes and classrooms and teachers lag behind demand. Enrollment by grade shows kindergarten 29 through twelfth grade 37, with freshmen up notably.

Massena schools begin the year with a full faculty after the board signed a contract with G I Arends for vocal music and commercial subjects. Three Anita Men To Run Cumberland Grocery Store

Today three Anita businessmen take over operations of the Cumberland grocery, formerly Mrs Doherty's. Carl, Rex Miller and Ray Lantz form a partnership to run the store managed by Sam Johnson, who has been with Kohl and Yantz in Anita. The store will close briefly for redecorating and installation of new frozen foods. Dale Jensen will join the Cumberland Kohl and Lantz store after military service, resuming his prior duties.

Albert Paul Hurt In Ladder Fall Near Town

Albert Paul was injured when he fell about 12 feet from a ladder while helping tear down a horn braces project near his farm northeast of town. He was taken by Anita emergency unit to Atlantic Memorial Hospital for treatment. He recently moved to the Barker house, and his daughter and son-in-law, the Clyde Moores, live on the accident site farm.

Nine men named for Anita School Board election

A caucus at Anita School Tuesday evening selected nine candidates for five board seats. Wayne Rich and Paul Kellaway named for three year terms. Paul Barber, Dr Tack L Lane, and Will McIntyre for two years. Arnell Enfield, Rey Parker and Gail Burke for one year. Ben McLuen to be precinct totepler. Superintendent Hornbuckle sent results to County Supt Morrow, who will set election date and publish regulations. The group urged holding the vote soon so the new board can begin before the July effective date of the reorganized district. Lloyd Harris chaired the meeting.

Merle Robison Installed Grand Senior in Lodge

Mrs. Merle Robison was installed Tuesday as grand senior at the Pythian Sister grand temple session in Des Moines. She served as grand organizer last year. Attending from here were Mrs. Robison, Mrs. Cacklen Hennemberg, and representatives Mrs. N. I. Strekham and Mrs. Lillian Turner. The Anita chapter will be lastesses Sept. 15 to the dismcn convention. it was held last year at Yale and four years ago at Anita.

Community Courses Offer Fall Classes at Peake University

Peake University in 34 towns opens fall courses including Town History at Ate lantic with Dr William Houlette and Measurement and Evaluation of Pupil Growth with Dr Alfred Schwartz. Classes meet Thursdays 6 30 pm at the high school with registration at the first class September 15. Additional courses include School Curricula at Audubon on Wednesdays Audio Visual Aids at Harlan on Thursdays and Educational Psychology at Guthrie Center on Wednesdays.
