Larry Behnken and Anita and Leroy Taylor acquire the Anita Pool Room from Werdell Williams. Possession date is set for Tuesday November 12, with Mr. and Mrs Arnold Jiffin to manage the new business.
Behnken Motor Co invites the public to an all day open house to view the 1958 Ford debuting in the area. The display features 21 models across two wheelbases including Fairlane, Fairlane 500 and station wagons with new styling, engines, and Cruise-O-Matic transmission. Coffee and balloons for kids.
The Rev. Robert Wendel of Austin Avenue Methodist Church, Sioux City, will be guest preacher at evangelistic services starting Sunday morning November 17 and continuing November 17 18 19 at Anita church and November 20 21 at Wiota church. He is a Taylor University and University of Dubuque Seminary graduate, WWII veteran, married with four children, and has served churches in North Indiana and North Iowa Conferences.
Elmer Jensen started this week at Chapman's Texaco Service on Main Street taking over from Delbert Kline who began October 28 at Walnut Grove Atlantic. Charles Pederson of Walnut begins this week at Anita and started at Rock Island Depot with Harry Gill.
O. W. Shaffer and Son hosted four to five hundred guests last Thursday at an open house for the new 1958 Chevrolet. Coffee and doughnuts were served and children received balloons. Bob Butler notes the models drew enthusiastic praise.
Anita residents reported a quiet Halloween as flu kept an estimated one fourth of area children indoors. Trick and Treat activities paused at main spots while Lions Club hosted a party at the Legion Hall with games by Royce Bissell and Russell Eden and lunch by Federated Club volunteers. First prize went to Mark Nelson as Sad Sam, Jolene Wedemeyer as gypsy, and Robert Scholl as The Devil. other costumes included Little Bo Peep and the Clown. Chamber of Commerce sponsored free movies at Anita Theatre drawing a full house for the 9 PM showing.
Mr and Mrs Michael Kelly welcome a daughter weighing 6 pounds 64 ounces born October 30 at 9 30 am at Atlantic Memorial hospital. Grandparents are Fred Scarlett of Adair and Paul Kelly of Anita, and the mother is formerly Cora Scarlett.
Steven Reed, son of Carl Reed of Atlantic, enlisted in the air force and left from Omaha yesterday for Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas. A 1957 Atlantic high school graduate, Reed previously lived in Anita and Wiota before moving to Atlantic last year.
At about 4 30 PM Monday on Anita Main Street in front of Dr LaRues office Carl Claussen backing from a parking space collided with a car driven by Tom Martin. Claussens 1949 Ford sustained about 150 dollars in damage while Martins car suffered radiator and grill damage. A double parked vehicle blocked view and the impact pushed Claussen’s car over the curb into the building. no injuries were reported.
Anita's Junior Spartans closed their season with a 13-0 win over Elliott on Elliott field. Tom McLuen connected on a two yard TD pass to Kevin Burke and Burke to Denny Sims for a 25 yard score, Sims added a late 40 yard run, McLuen the extra point. The defense held Elliott to two first downs.
Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Robert Mackrill 61 who died Thursday morning at Atlantic Memorial hospital after a heart attack. She was born Mamie Sanders December 8 1895 near Griswold and married Robert J Mackrill in 1920. Surviving are her husband three sons three brothers and four sisters. Burial was in Pleasant Township Cemetery south of Griswold. The Canton Odd Fellows served as honor guard at the cemetery.
Over 200 people expected for the first all community banquet at Anita school gym. Spartans to letter 21 players, with five seniors leaving. proceeds fund athletic injuries and a queen and king voting drive.
Most Anita businesses including the bank will close Monday for Veterans Day and the post office will follow a holiday schedule with no rural deliveries. The Anita public school stays open with the band traveling to Atlantic for the celebration.
The Anita Congregation church will hold its annual harvest dinner and bazaar on Saturday November 16 with serving starting at 11 30 A M local time.
John Rasmussen was elected vice chairman of the 7th district Iowa Poultry Hatchery Association at a Wednesday meeting in Shenandoah. Attendees included Mr and Mrs John Rasmussen and Mr and Mrs Dick Bissell.
Sixty-six votes were cast in Anita Tuesday in the uncontested town election. For mayor, Tom Burns received 62 votes with one write-in for George Smith er and Homer Rich. In the council race, Harvey Fletcher and Ted Walker led with 66 votes, others from 65 to 63, plus write-ins for Chet Wagner and Max Karns. Albert Karns Jr. and Jack Long each had 62 votes for treasurer and park commissioner respectively, with Art Stone a single write-in for park commissioner.
A plate glass window at Les Eddy's clothing store was broken Tuesday around 4 30 p m when two grade school children scuffled and one pushed the other through the window. No injuries were reported and displayed merchandise was damaged by flying glass.
Mrs. Anity winner Anity Mrs. Mike Lambertson took a $10 merchandise gift certificate prize. Contestants in the playoff draw included Fred Dressler Mrs. Ruby Watson and Mrs. Bill Boedeker.
At Veterans Hospital Frank Kuhn owner of a Main Street jewelry store is a patient in Omaha undergoing observation. Jake Donohoe custodian at the Anita State Bank was taken to Omaha yesterday for examination and possible admittance. Mrs Gilbert Wehrman has been released from St Josephs hospital in Omaha.
Attendance at Anita schools shows improvement as flu absences drop. Readings: 85 total today, 55 elementary and 30 high school. prior days 107, 324, and 106. Officials note no school closures and fewer cases than in other towns, with some students returning too soon and relapsing.
