Defeat and Return to Washington Amid War’s Strain

Stonewall Jackson Advances Against Federal Forces

In late April Stonewall Jackson moved west of the mountains toward Staunton, joining Johnson and defeating Milroy and Schenck at one blow. Ewell moved into the Shenandoah Valley, Banks retreated to Strasburg, then Jackson and Ewell pushed toward Front Royal near the Shenandoah River.
