Grasshopper Situation Serious in Southwest Iowa
Farmers in western and southwestern Iowa are urged to monitor pasture fields and fence rows for early grasshopper activity. Dr. Carl J. Drake, state entomologist, recommends poisoning hatching grounds to prevent damage to small grain, clover, and corn. Principal species include the differential grasshopper, lesser migratory locust, and two lined grasshopper. Poison bran is available through county agents, with two carloads distributed free under Ray Murray of the agriculture department.

Premiums Largest in 5 Years at Des Moines State Fair
Cash premiums totaling 104 430 announced for Towa's annual state fair in Des Moines August 98 to September 4. The state fair board said this is the largest payout in five years with over 16 000 for 4-H boys and girls show contests. National livestock show premiums lead with cattle 27 461 and horses 16 425. other prizes include wine 11 000 and agricultural exhibits 5 260. The premium list covers speed, cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, dairy, fruit, vegetables, flowers, culinary, textile and china, apiary, art, photography, women's projects, and various contests.
