Local council accepts resignation and elects successor

At a special town meeting in Anita, Fred Sheley’s council seat was resigned and unanimously filled by O. W. Shaffer who took the oath from Mayor Campbell. Shaffer inherits Sheley’s committee roles as streets and alleys chair. The town advances road and paving projects with work along Linn Street to the corporation line and a new bridge south of Jenkins property. Wells near the pumping station are expanded, daily water use rises with curb and gutter progress along Cherry Street and toward the White Pole Garage. Superintendent Stucker invites residents to ask questions, notes contractors will be paid for a three foot dirt setback, and calls for workers to join the paving crew.

Baby Girl Born Without Eyes Near City

A baby girl born to Mr and Mrs erald Akers near the city may lack eyesight. Dr G M Adair plans to bring an eye specialist soon in hopes of restoring sight. John D Roe of Atlantic visited the city Friday.

First City League Opener Sets Cubs Giants White Sox

City league starts next Monday with three teams Cubs Giants and White Sox. Monday night Cubs meet Sox while Sox face Giants Friday. Managers Chas Robinson Jake Donohoe and Guy Rasmussen lead their squads with rosters including Bear Millhollin Bartley and McGraw among names.

Anita City League First Half Schedule Published

The schedule lists league games from May 7 to July 6 including Sox Cubs Giants matchups. Notes mention window shades offered at 75 cents and reports of visitors and funeral attendance among local residents. A pleasant Saturday drew large crowds in Anita.

School Notes and Activities At Local District

The Parent-Teacher Association and School Board bought a Giant Stride and swings for younger students. The Senior Class awaits copies of the Class Play for rehearsals. The Junior-Senior Banquet is set for next Friday evening, prepared by Junior Class mothers. Hospital patients show slow improvement with penmanship ward tests using Gettysburg Edition Ayres scale. class median is 50 with speed 72. Thomas Bailey leads the list and may be released soon. Mrs Anna Mae Boatright Mac Intyre will sing Friday at 1 PM in the high school assembly room.

Audubon Boy Sought in Seduction Charge

Russell Martinsen, a former Audubon boy, is sought on a seduction charge after the Audubon county grand jury returned a true bill. Sheriff Jorgensen wired Burlington officials to arrest him, but he is believed to have fled to parts unknown. The complainant is Nellie Miller, 15, who alleges he is the father of her child.

Friday Bridge Club Fetes Mrs Sheley At Home

Mrs. Fred M. Sheley hosted the Friday Bridge Club at her home last Friday afternoon. Substitutes for the afternoon were Mrs. G. M. DeCamp, Mrs. J. B. Lewis and Mrs. W. F. Budd.

White Way No 7 subscriptions being collected now

Those who last year subscribed to the White Way Number 7 association, formerly the Chicago Omaha Short Line, are being called on for this year’s fees. Al Fischer of Iowa City is general manager and secretary, with pole marking planned along the Chicago to Omaha route and extending west next year. Anita members cheerfully pay as towns along the eastern end boost the highway.

Glenn Holmes and wife visited from Guthrie Center over the weekend, staying with E. W. Holmes and J. C. Jenkins families. The notice promotes summer union suits for men women boys and girls priced no higher than last year.

Corn and Oats Planting Upset in 1923 Survey

Des Moines May 2 An official U S Department of Agriculture bulletin shows a 2.6 percent rise in corn and oats acreage for 1923 from 1922 levels based on farmer reports from early April. Regions in the western belt and far west lead increases while southern states show decreases.

Quarantine Placed on Griswold Stock Yards Over Contagious Cattle Disease

Griswold stock yards were quarantined after cattle shipment passing through were found afflicted with scabies upon arrival in Omaha. The U S Department of Agriculture ordered disinfection Monday morning and the move caused delays and lower prices for Fred Seifford whose cattle stood in the yards briefly before the quarantine.

Notice Of Office Closure For State Dental Meeting

The office will be closed Tuesday through Thursday May 1 2 3 while staff attend the State Dental meeting. Dr P T Williams and Glenn H Campbell of Pittsburg PA visited with Mrs Henry Kuehn and family. Glenn, Anita’s son, is advertising manager of the National Stockman and Farmer.

State Checkers Cost Cass County Over $1100

The 1921 and 1922 county books checked by state examiners totaled 1171.07. Auditor Jennie M. Ward received the itemized bill showing 1921 costs 631.63 and 1922 costs 539.14, with salaries, transportation, hotels, and sundries for Davidson and Stranahan.

Observance of Flag Law Encouraged in Rural Schools

E L C White of Spencer urges strict adherence to Iowa flag law requiring American flags on rural school houses whenever weather allows. A Jasper County inquiry found 31 schools noncompliant. 25 had no flag, 7 had flags without suitable display. Flags are available from the county superintendent funded by the Iowa Patriotic association and donors Geo Schee H W Stoy and wife visited Guthrie Center.

Chaffee Home Hosts Weekend Family Gathering

The G. M. Chaffee home west of the city hosted a family gathering last Sunday. Distants attendees included S. R. Chapin and wife from Prophetstown Illinois Ernest Stevens and family from Lewis F. L. Green and family from Sarah Mrs L. J. Sands from Atlantic and C. R. Chaffee from the Wiota area.
