Ida Muntendam dies suddenly at 80 in Anita

Ida Muntendam 80 longtime Anita resident died suddenly Thursday in her rocking chair after April 26 at her home. Funeral services were held Monday at the Methodist church with Rev. Summerbell officiating and floral tributes listed. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. She was born near Town July 30 1866 and married W G K Muntendam in 1885. Survivors include four sisters and several relatives.

Double Celebration for Larry Barber Birthday

A joint party marked Larry Barber’s fourth birthday on April 26 hosted by Mr and Mrs L G North of Anita Ved. Nancy Anderson, daughter of Northa Anderson, attended with gifts. Guests enjoyed a four candle birthhead and a lunch in the evening.

Double Parking Liable for Damages Says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Penn holds a driver who double parks and causes an accident is liable for damages. R. E. Rhoades of the Motor Club of Iowa notes many Iowa motorists double park and could face injury or property damages. The Marchletal vs. Dowling case cited involved a child struck after a double parked car blocked view. The Motor Club urges police to arrest double park operators to prevent accidents.

Cass County Centennial Celebrations Planned at Lewis

A county meeting of town chairmen and Centennial supporters decided that all towns in Cass County will hold joint celebrations in Lewis, Iowa on July 4 valiantly uniting under one event. Anita’s William A. Linfor and Cal Darrow attended, with Linfor named Anita’s chairman.

Family Dinner in Honor of Paul Powers at Ruthven

A Sunday dinner at Elmer Jensen home honored Paul Powers of Ruthven Town. A large crowd of relatives attended a basket meal as Paul Powers, son of Mrs. L. L. Dorsey, was recognized. Neil Johnson has discharged from the army and returns to Anita with Mrs. Johnson for a brief vacation before work at the Golden Rule store. Mrs. Carrie Reynold visited home after Easter with daughter Mrs. Ben Kirkham and family. Mrs. Herbert Bartley attended events in Atlantic with daughter Mrs. Dale Cornell for a Mother Daughter event hosted by the Atlantic BPO Elks Chapter.

Trucks Badly Wrecked In Accident Near Anita

Friday morning at about 10 00 two trucks collided four miles south of Anita on primary 148. Harold Heeren of Anita drove a cream hauler south while Fred Uhlman westbound in a pickup struck the left rear of Heeren causing a rollover. Cream and bread spilled the highway. both drivers were shaken and bruised. Herman Roberts in Uhlman’s car suffered a fractured arm and head cuts, treated in Anita and later Atlantic.

Anita to Organize a Soft Ball League

At a Greater Anita club meeting last Thursday a softball league was proposed for this summer in Anita. A committee including Kenneth Turner Solon Karns Bernard Lege Wayne Jewett Supt Littell and Wilbur Matthews was chosen to organize it. The league may have four to six teams with further details to be published soon. Mr and Mrs Robert Howard are in Lenox Iowa this week due to the death of her mother Mrs Catherine Quinn. The funeral was held Thursday morning.

Ernest Ford resigns as manager of the Unita Municipal Utilities effective June 1 after serving since August 1 1939. He plans to move to California to establish his home. The board has not yet planned for a replacement manager.

Picnic Dinner In Anita Area Draws Several Local Residents

Mr and Mrs Wm Dorala and Mr and Mrs John Schaake drove north of Anita Sunday for a picnic dinner. They later visited Brayton where Mrs Schaake’s brother Ed Stager and Lt Jack Roe left for the Great Lakes Naval Training Center to receive discharge after a short leave. Roe had spent last weekend in Iowa City. Mr and Mrs Ralph Hauswirth and two children of Shenandoah called on friends in Anita Saturday. Mrs Hauswirth is known as Lilith Baker a former Anita public school mathematics and Latin teacher.

Legion Auxiliary Holds Regular Monthly Meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary met at Legion Hall on Friday afternoon April 26. Mrs. Phillip McCosh presided as minutes were read and approved. Reports noted 22 carnival gifts sent to Knoxvilla hospital and other charitable activities. Delegates and alternates for the Shenandoah spring conference were chosen. Plans made to entertain Cass County Legion and Auxiliary on April 29 in Anita. Penny March raised 44 cents. 25 members attended and sewed carpet rags for Des Moines hospital.

Mr and Mrs N L Palmer of Council Bluffs welcomed a baby boy named Dennis Leroy weighing about 73 pounds at 1100 am Tuesday. The mother underwent a caesarean section and is recovering well. Mrs Palmer is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bryan Parker of Anita and accompanied by her mother to Council Bluffs.

Pre-war road surfacing costs in Iowa farms and towns

The Iowa State Highway commission reports average all weather surfacing for county secondary roads at 1104 per mile, arguing against claims that 11000 per mile is needed to connect 31000 miles of roads.
