Iowa Farm Families Forced Off Lands Prompt Rent Search

Security Administration officials report that about 6 000 Iowa farm families were forced from the land in spring as they sought farms to rent. A survey of farm rent conditions in the Midwest shows 442 of 9 800 farm rehabilitation clients in Iowa could not obtain farms, with further hundreds eligible for loans unable to secure them. County supervisors note 388 renters not eligible for FSA help failed to find farms, while many move from rich northern areas to southern parts seeking tenancy. Factors include expanding units, power equipment, drought migration, and credit limits. Efforts focus on better leases, land conservation, and low interest credit to stabilize farming households. Individual reports cite weather, local decimation of rural jobs, and ongoing tenant program expansion under bank act provisions.
