Anita Utilities Board Proceedings March 1956

The Anita Municipal Utilities Board met in regular session with Trustees Scott Shaffer and others. Budget items and bills were approved, Shaffer named chairman for 1956 57, various funds transfers and office expenses listed, adjourned to March 1 1956. A later session discussed road improvements with township trustees and renewed insurance for maintenance tools. County Jail and Home Grand Jury report received.

Five years ago on March 22 1951 Anita residents held church events school board notes and social milestones. Ed L Newton and wife hosted open house for their sixtieth wedding anniversary while Herbert Ted Cooley bought the Anita Cafe and Merle Robison became Board of Education president with Phil's Super Market listing butter and oleo prices. Lucille Jebsen edited the Anita Tribune and church services and youth group activities were announced for the coming weekend.

Local Corners Sell Margarine and Coffee Prices Cited

The Briardale Grocery on A. St Kutt offered margarine at 2uc per pound while Crawford's Clover Farm Store sold coffee at 23c per pound. Walter P. Budd, editor at the Anita Tribune, notes the prices in town.

Abby Mallory 80th Birthday Noted at Daughter’s Home

Mrs. Abby Mallory celebrated her 80th birthday quietly at the home of her daughter Mrs. Nellie East. The town held one election with Cal Darrow running to succeed himself as mayor and council members Dresel Chadwick Alfred Dement E C Dorsey Bernard Legg and Burl Roots returning. The Anita Grocery offered winesap apples at two pounds for 28 cents and Koi and Lantz sold coffee at 34 cents a pound. Paul R Brown was editor Anita Tribune for the town.

Christian Science churches will stress the idolatry of material power over spiritual power in Sunday services on March 18. The Lesson-Sermon titled Matter features the Golden Text from Isaiah declaring the Lord’s name and glory belong to him alone and not to graven images.

City election looms in a changing era 1911 1920

Dr G M Adair and Dr F D Weimer ran for school director while incumbent P T Williams did not seek re election. Mr and Mrs Maurice Neff welcomed a baby girl at Anita home. Adolf Hitler neared year four in the German Reich, a fact largely noted with little impact locally.

Longtime Anita businessman Val Wiegand marks 89th birthday

Valentine Wiegand known as Val celebrated his 89th birthday. Born January 19 1855 in Klahn Hessen Germany he immigrated with Margaret Lawrock in 1880. He opened a shoe repair shop in Anita, ran it 55 years, retired six years ago, and remains a sturdy presence on Main Street. He and his wife raised nine children, seven died, and he now tends his garden and family stay in Adair and with relatives including Karl H von Wiegand the foreign correspondent.
