Anita public library received a large influx of new books in recent weeks. Librarian Mrs. Cora Stoodt notes strong reading interest with January circulation reaching 1,048 fiction volumes. The list includes works by Du Maurier, Kantor, Parmenter, Oates, and many other authors across fiction and non fiction.
The Hardy family stars in Out West With the Hardys at Rialto Theatre showing Saturday and Sunday with a 2:00 matinee. Lewis Stone, Mickey Rooney, Cecilia Parker lead a story of Judge Hardy corralling his family, resolving love troubles, and untangling water rights in a light hearted western adventure alongside new cast additions and newsreels.
Figures from the Old Age Assistance Commission of Iowa show 435 Cass County residents received old age assistance in January, totaling 8876. The average per person was 20.40. statewide, 50,863 persons received checks totaling 1,007,640 dollars, averaging 19.81 per person. Eight Cass County residents received aid for the blind in January, totaling 163.70 dollars at an average of 28.48 per person.
Thieves raided three Massena business houses and the high school Saturday night, with loot estimated at about $200. The Farmers Savings Bank was entered but nothing reported missing. Entrance came by smashing a basement window and prying a door lock. Drawers and files were ransacked. At Farmers Cooperative elevator a door was pried and cash outside rifled of checks worth $150. Thieves could not cash the checks. At Central cafe about $30 was taken from the cash register using a master key. The high school raid was found by Supt Derrell Slocum. An iron basement door was pried open and the office door panel smashed. desks and files were ransacked but nothing of value taken. The article notes Theodore HW Nichols of Long Beach Cal visited Massena with friends and mentions a past role as manager of a lumber yard in Anita.
Farmers seeking Clarke McNary forestry aid at Ames must apply now. More than three million trees are available but blanks are filling fast, on a first come, first served basis. Prices range from $2 to $6 per thousand, with a minimum order of 1 000 trees and at least 600 per species. Readiness for planting and future income from timber and posts are noted.
The Anita high school boys and girls basketball teams won Cass county county championships in 1926, making Anita one of the few schools to claim both titles in the same year. The boys defeated Massaena 27 to 12, Cumberland 11 to 10, and Atlantic 28 to 16. The girls beat Lewis 24 to 14 in the finals after edging Viota 8 to 7 in overtime and Cumberland 11 to 6 to reach the finals. The district/sectional and county honors were celebrated with banquets and plaques from the Cass County School Masters Club and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Paul McCarthy operator for Azel Ames had his truck overturned returning to Anita after a show in Elk Horn last Saturday night. The vehicle skidded on a slippery road and the gear was badly scrambled though McCarthy was uninjured. Special spring wallpaper sale advertised amid the report.
Mayor C F Darrow will appoint a six year trustee for Anita filling George Shaffer's place, with confirmation by the town council. A library board seat will be filled later for Mrs J A Wagner, terms run six years. Other trustees Scott and Long hold terms to 1941 and 1943 respectively. Wilbur Dallinger of Atlantic becomes traveling auditor for the state gas tax division, succeeding Sam Childs. Funeral reported for Earl F Townsend.
