Villisca, June 11. Eight people were murdered with an axe at the Moore home, including James B. Moore and his wife, four children, and Edith and Blanche Stillinger. Sheriff and coroner arrived, bloodhounds and detectives deployed, no arrests yet, motive unclear, victim ages span 6 to 20, no robbery observed.

Mrs. Kate Staten aged 28 of South First and Clay streets drowned in the Des Moines river when a fishing boat capsized about two miles south of the First Street bridge. Her body was not recovered and she leaves three children staying at the Soldiers' Orphans' home in Davenport.
