Weather Woes As Iowa Seeks Rain For Crops

The region enters its eighth day with little rainfall and all Iowa crops feel the drought. Hay harvest begins, corn mostly unharmed, wheat thriving, but a lack of rain threatens straw and grain yields. Gardens berries and early potatoes suffer, and farmers pray for rain within the week.

Clean-up Campaign Drawing To Close

The annual weed and garbage clean-up has progressed through alleys and back yards but many areas remain. If not completed by week’s end, the street commission will require hauling and labor costs charged to the property owners.

Memorial Week End Guests Share Dense Attendee List

A long list of mourners and relatives from multiple states and towns attended a Memorial Week End gathering in Anita Iowa. Attendees included Mr and Mrs, numerous residents of Kansas City Missouri and Des Moines Iowa, plus guests from Treynor Creston Council Bluffs and Atlantic Iowa as well as Regina Sak Canada and Bay City. New Telephone Manager Arrives to Lead West Town Co

Mr. Al Newman, with 35 years in the telephone business and recent work in the Government Signal Corp Repair Dept, arrived Wednesday to assume duties as manager of the West Town Telephone Company in Nebraska City. He will pursue faster repairs and better service, though much remains to be done. Newman is not married and is rooming at Leo Brindley’s residence.

Local Young Lady Appears on KMA Radio Program

Mrs Ganelle Richter daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Richter spoke on the KMA station Shenandoah Tuesday evening at 645. She discussed her work with the Gay Grant 4H girls and won the American Legion Atlantic Day contest with the topic Our Great American Heritage. Richter a Grant No 9 pupil will enter Anita High School this fall.

Memorial Day Dinner and Services Held in Anita

The Memorial Day Dinner in Anita drew many out of town guests as 47 dinners were served. Afterward the Memorial Day services took place at the High School, followed by final services by the American Legion, Auxiliary and the VFW at Evergreen Cemetery with strong attendance and a united program.

Local Masons To Attend Convention In Sioux City

Iowa's 84 803 Masons will assemble at Sioux City's Masonic Temple June 8 9 and 10 for the 104th Annual Communication of the Iowa Masonic Grand Lodge. More than 800 representatives are expected from 645 subordinate lodges within the Grand Lodge jurisdiction. Grand Master J W Gray of Mount Pleasant will preside. The annual School of Instruction will be conducted by the Board of Custodians at the temple on June 4 6 and 7.

Knowlton Family Returns From Vacation in Washington D C

Misses Norma and Amy Knowlton of Washington D C returned to their work after a month’s vacation with parents Earl and Mrs Knowlton and relatives. Sister Jetta, a teacher in Anita Public Schools, will spend summer in Washington D C.

Local youths arrested after illegal parking sighted

Several youths were arrested in Anita after a Highway Patrolman found a car parked illegally and discovered alcohol consumption. They admitted buying beer from local dealer Walt Inhofe. Inhofe was released on $500 bond. The case heads to October grand jury. The car owner received a fine for double parking.

Greater Anita Club Holds First May Meeting at Lutheran Church

The May meeting of the Greater Anita Club convened at the Lutheran Church on Thursday evening. Officers elected for the year include President Les Eddy, Vice President Jim Osen, Treasurer Ben MeLeuen, and Secretary Rex Mller. The club discussed improvements for Anita, including street and alley spraying in the business district, a required peddlers license, and written authorization for out of town solicitations. Plans for a July horse show and repainting town signs were approved, aiming to boost progress and community spirit. Cal Jewett recalls receiving a silver dollar as a boy in 1890, a keepsake he still carries today.

Out-of-town Visitors At Dougherty Home

Mr and Mrs Raymond Dougherty and their son in law and daughter and baby from San Antonio arrived in Anita Sunday to visit Mrs Taabella Dougherty. Also visiting were John Dougherty and family and Mrs Lawrence Groanland and husband from Des Moines. Later guests included Mrs Dougherty’s daughters and their husbands from Meadville Pennsylvania.
