Republicans Nominate Swan for Attorney General in Iowa

Delegates chosen by county Republicans in Atlantic advance Harry B. Swan of Atlantic as nomination candidate for attorney general at the state convention to be held in Des Moines on July 25. Swan led among primary votes with third place, while Sioux City and Des Moines candidates trailed. The meeting also re-elected county officials and named delegates to the judicial and state conventions, showcasing optimism for a GOP victory in Iowa this fall.

Iowa Women to Exhibit at State Fair in Des Moines

Iowa women plan a major exposition at the Iowa State Fair August 24 to 31. The program, run by a coalition of statewide women’s groups, features cooking canning shows, flower displays, farming project exhibits, health contests, parent teacher conferences, and daily music projects. Mrs. H. W. Spaulding of Ames chairs the event with a broad committee representing all participating organizations.

G G Jeck of Atlantic Cass county chaired the Democratic county convention at the Legion Memorial building. Action was unanimous as Jeck was endorsed for seventh district committeeman and delegates to state and district conventions were chosen. Conway elected temporary chairman and keynoted, sixteen delegates named.

Mother of Anita Farmer Dies in Extra Iowa at 92

Lena Delmer Wahlert 92 longtime Audubon county resident died at her Extra Iowa home from old age complications. Born February 26 1842 in Finkofen Germany she came to the United States in 1866. She and Jurgen Wahlert married in 1864 and lived in Moline Illinois before moving to Henry county and then Audubon county in the 1800s. Survived by eight children thirty three grandchildren and forty great grandchildren. one son John died two years ago. Funeral at home officiated by Rev A G Whittier with burial in Extra cemetery.

Iowa old age pension blanks distributed statewide

Distribution of old age assistance application blanks began in Iowa on Monday at a rate of five per 1000 people. About 18,000 blanks will be sent, including 100 for Cass county, with payments starting November 1 after local investigations and commission approvals. The process includes detailed questions on birth, citizenship, relatives, income, property, and health, with no union with relief administration.

Investigators Probe County Poor Overseer Office

Investigators from the state emergency relief office, at Cass county’s request, examine the Atlantic office of Pauline Thrower, Cass county overseer of the poor. The probe follows a mass meeting accusing mismanagement and mistreatment of applicants. Final findings will come from Des Moines. Also notes visits by locals and a property sale for a blacksmith shop.

Iowa pig crop cut 25 percent in 1934 survey

Iowa farmers trim hog production beyond the 25 percent corn hog target per the June government pig survey. The 1934 spring pig crop fell 23 percent from 1933, with fall farrowings planned 45 percent below 1933. Nationally, spring pig crop down 28 percent, with fall aims 38 percent lower. Fewer pigs to market expected next season across the United States.
