A reflective column on Independence Day weighs the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson, and the slave trade. It considers the Liberty Bell’s history, the nation’s birth pains, and the value of liberty while urging a safe, thoughtful celebration.
To 190 children and 11 adults enroll for swimming Monday and Wednesday mornings this week. About 150 youngsters from Anita line up at Concert Park by 9 o clock awaiting buses to Sunnyside Park Atlantic for Red Cross lessons starting July 1 for 10 sessions. Anita chair Mrs Donald Chadwick leads with assisting volunteers. Bus drivers include Andy Miller Henry Wieman and Jack Blazek. Eleven Anita adults join the instruction on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 30 to 9 30.
Anita Callhams led a busy week as her team went 4-2 in six games. Wins came against Carson 23 to 9 and the Pee Wees beat Grswald 11 to 4, while the Midgets beat Grsswald 9 to 3 and Adair 2 to 2 with Al Kline homering and Denny Sims tossing a no hitter. Losses were PeeWees to Wota 14 to 6 and the girls to Fontanelle 25 to 15.
Mr and Mrs Robert Pratt of Osceola welcomed a son, Thomas Genie Pratt, born Friday at Clark County Hospital weighing 7 pounds with Opal Fries as grandmother. Elden Turner and Royce Eldon named child Royce Eldon. Jay Wesley Taylor born at Atlantic Memorial Hospital weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces. first child for Normatt Taylor of Cumberland. Marvin Taylor and Elizabeth's Cafe staff noted.
Mr. Edgren of the transportation department of the Iowa Department of Public Instruction attended a conference at Anita School on Wednesday of last week. Supt. Glen C. Hornbuckle arranged the event with regional superintendents including Warren R. Morrow of Atlantic Cass county, Orin Brinkley of Extra, Leo Doubleday of Adair, Richard Manson of Fontanelle, Oliver Joince of Cumberland, William Lovelace of Griswold, and R J Green of Greenfield.
Service notes describe the first extensive troop exercise in the atomic test series at Camp Desert Rock near the Nevada Test Site on June 28. The 4th Marine Corps Provisional Atomic Exercise Brigade conducted rapid assault operations using vertical envelopment by helicopter and amphibious tracked vehicles to study protection and equipment effects under atomic blasts.
Supt. Glen C. Hornbuckle announces three new hires completing the Anita School system staff for the coming year. Donald M. Hey will teach science, a Cedar Rapids resident, UF his BA in physics and minor in math from the University of Iowa City. Arilith A. Oliver of Whiting Town will teach commercial subjects, a 1957 University of South Dakota graduate with business administration BS, plus prior studies and four years Nevada teaching experience.

Anita public library adds new titles across fiction nonfiction and youth sections. Notable novels include Say Darling The Scapegoat The Bridge st Andan by Michel sigr and The Wapshot Chronicle by Cheever. Nonfiction features Bible Atlas Stay Alive All Your Life and The Bible as History. Teenage picks include Julie Heritage Big Brave and Handsome Mirror Mirror False Start and Lion Hound plus Miracles on Maple Hill and Brownie Scout Mystery among others.
Twelve boys from the Anita Boy Scouts accompanied by counsellor Jack Blanck will attend a camp session next week.
The American Republic hospital and surgical insurance company based in Des Moines will send representatives to towns and rural areas in the next weeks. They will carry proper credentials as described in the issue advertisement.
Conservation Commission reminders announce new laws in Iowa. Motor boats on artificial lakes over 100 acres face a six horsepower limit starting July 4, replacing five horsepower. Women 16 and older must hold fishing licenses statewide after July 4, and town residency fishing and hunting licenses rise to 2 dollars or 3.50 in a combo. Non residents under 14 are exempt. Night time speed limit is one mile per hour, effective tonight starting at midnight.
Last Saturday four players scored in Anita competition here in the evening. Leo Christensen Mrs Les Miner Vern Roberts of Menlo and Lorraine Garside are named. In the playoff Leo Christensen won ten dollars in merchandise certificates.
July 4 observance causes bank and most business houses to close. Post office follows holiday schedule with no band concert this evening.
Miss Shirley Johnson of Dayton Iowa begins duties as Cass County Extension Home Economist replacing Mrs Mabel Flint. Johnson trained in Clayton and Audubon counties and graduated Iowa State College in March 1957 in Home Economics Education. She held 4-H leadership roles and will work with Family Living and Gill 4-H to develop county education programs under the Cass County Extension Council with Dan Merrick and Max Harland.
Charles Yoak pastor of the Aulac Congregational Church serves as a counselor this week at Camp Montour the new conference camp for Congregational Youth used this summer for the first time.
The Rev. G. Barnes presented Jensen with a Bible at Sunday morning services at Anita Methodist Church. The gift came from Vacation Bible teachers in recognition of Jensen's help with the building, especially after the flood.
