The 1935 corn-hog program nears one million signers as contracts move toward final signatures. Wickard notes most cooperators are Belt states, with 58.78 million acres under base for 1935 and 55.31 million for 1934, a 10 percent base reduction.
Rialto Theatre returns to one show weekly policy this July and August. The feature for Saturday and Sunday evenings is People Will Talk with Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland in a domestic comedy about a quarrel between a daughter and her husband. A charity wrestling match refereed by Ruggles provides the comic climax. Also shown are Betty Boop cartoon Swat the Fly and Musical Cocktail with Anson Weeks and his orchestra.
E. T. Randall wife and daughter Betty Dee of Lincoln Neb visited here with Chas Workman and family and others. They attended a Selby family reunion in Bridgewater. Mrs. Randall known as Maude Vesulius, daughter of George Vesulius, lived here before moving to Lincoln in 1908. The Vesulius clan are in good health. George, youngest child, is vice president of Kresge stores in Chicago.
The retiring merchant thanks friends and customers for 165 years of business and states that unsettled accounts should be settled at Darrow's store run by Mr. Darrow. Burkhart notes that the books are available for contact.
Frank K. Carter returned home Friday after a visit in Hampton with his brother L. H. Carter and wife. W. H. Pearson and daughter from Madison, Wis., were weekend visitors in Amita at L. D. Pearson's home and with cousin Mrs. A. A. Miller. Eva responde was voted in favor of continuance of the Act, the sole pregrent under which voting occurred on the avreage basis.
George Pratt, 74, a longtime Anita area resident and brother of the late W. D. and R. C. Pratt, died after a short tuberculosis illness at his Rouleau Saskatchewan home. Born Feb 2 1861 near Cordovia Illinois, he married Fannie Mosley and lived on a Benton Township farm before moving to Canada about 35 years ago where he held extensive real estate. Survived by his wife and four children Clarence of Rouleau Ray in Texas Wilbur of Springfield Missouri and Ethel Posten of Rouleau. Buried near Rouleau cemetery.
A new beauty shop named New Modern opens in Anita on Walnut Street behind the old Citizens State Bank building. Proprietor Miss Martha Kinyon arrives from Greenfield with modern equipment and a black and silver design, inviting locals to inspect. Also noted: Jans Rose leaves West Main Street auto shop for his north city site, and rural mail carrier Frank R. Mitchell transfers from Hastings, with his family settling on Rose II Avenue.
Anson Karns, son of Kenny Karns of Anita, and Helen Morland of Melcher Iowa, were united in marriage at 2 30 PM last Saturday at the First Presbyterian church in Des Moines. Rev. Percy Nichols officiated. They were accompanied by Cecil Harding of Melcher. The couple returned to Anita to begin their home and received widespread congratulations.
Miss Ruth Branen, home economics teacher at Anita High School, married Carl Rood of Webster, South Dakota, on June 10 at her Council Bluffs home. Rood runs a Webster gasoline service station. the couple are now at home to friends.
Sheriff P P Edwards has transported James C Fox a 60 year old Sac City resident to Fort Madison state penitentiary to serve seven years for obtaining money under false pretenses. Fox a traveling salesman solicited Chicago and New York apparel orders and collected part payment but did not remit funds to the suppliers. Fifty three county residents report being bilked by Fox.
The Conoco Travel Bureau predicts a record tourist season with twice as many travelers on the road compared to last summer. Dust storms, new topsoil, and receded floods have freshened highways and scenery, boosting appeal of mountain regions with wildflowers. The bureau reports 115 percent more trip service applications in the first five and a half months of the year 1994, and over 250 staff working in Denver to assist travelers.
Librarian Mrs. Cora Stoodt announces new arrivals across travel, fiction, juvenile, and non fiction categories. Notable titles include Six Years in the Malay Jungle by Carveth Wells Travel and Adventure and Goodbye Mr. Chips by James Hilton. Also several Zane Grey westerns and Warwick Deeping novels among dozen plus titles. Free gift volumes from publishers include The Open Door at Home by Charles Beard and The Challenge to Liberty by Herbert Hoover.
M. M. Burkhart sold his Anita grocery to C. F. Darrow who will move in with his son-in-law Wayne Jewett assisting. The store will be renamed Darrow's Grocery and the Darrow family will relocate from Berea after purchasing a Fifth and Walnut Streets residence. Burkhart retires after about fifteen years in Anita.
Mrs. Gertrude E Major from Enid Oklahoma visits Anita with her mother Mrs. Alice Anderson and her brother Ed Anderson. She taught in Enid public schools for twenty years and her daughter Louise teaches at Emerson Junior High. She holds a B D and BS from Phillips University and is active in the American Association of University Women Enid Writers Club and Oklahoma State Poetry Society. Her poems have appeared in the American Author Oklahoman and Enid Events. one will appear in next weeks Tribune.
Dr C E Harry and wife with children Beth and Max returned to Anita from southern California via Portland and Idaho Utah and Colorado. They plan to stay at least two months. Mrs Lawrence Battey of Marenis mo Mich visited parents Jas Herriman and wife. Anita fire department held its quarterly meeting with 32 members present. Ruben Scott was added as a new member.
