Iowa Railroads Join Air Spotters in Defense Effort

Three Iowa railroads Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Chicago North Western and Chicago Burlington and Quincy joined about a thousand air craft observers this week boosting Iowa’s volunteer air spotters to around 4000 with aim of 24-hour surveillance in 27 states. Iowa counties listed include Winneshiek Allamakee Clayton Delaware Dubuque Jackson Clinton Scott and parts of Muscatine Howard and Fayette with reports channeled to Des Moines Minneapolis or Chicago filter centers before radar and interceptor bases.

Mother of Anitan Dies at 84 in Defiance

Mrs. George Luford aged 84 known as Aunt Mary died June 20 at her Defiance home. She had spent years in a wheelchair and was the mother of Mrs. Leslie Harrison. Attendees from here included Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Claussen and children, Mrs. William Watson, and Mrs. Gail Harrison.

Dick Legg Pitches No Hit No Run Game

Midgets fans saw Dick Legg pitch a no hit no run game against Adair. Legg struck out 12 and walked two, hitting one batter. Doug Smith singled, stole two bases, and scored on Salmon's single. Salmon added a run on a squeeze bunt by Dale Dorsey. Anita's infield supported Legg with solid defense.

Anita Baseball Defeats Cumberland 13-3 in Five Innings

Anita defeated Cumberland 13-3 in five innings after rain postponed the game Sunday afternoon. Tom Casey led off safely every time, Tom Salmon went 4 for 4 with two homers including a grand slam, Linn Bissell and Dick Legg collected three hits each, and Doug Smith held Cumberland to three runs in the first inning before a shutout the rest of the game.

In Atlantic Tuesday evening the Anita Midgets held a 9 7 lead going into the seventh before Atlantic rallied for three runs to win 10 9. Legg and Salmon pitched well for Atlantic while Anita batters totaled 13 hits.

Atlantic Declared One of Nation's Safest for Pedestrians

Atlantic named among nine Iowa cities cited for top pedestrian safety in the 1951 National Pedestrian Protection Contest. Cherokee tied for second in its class as the state’s highest scorer while 1,235 cities were evaluated. The program started in 1939 by the American Automobile Association to reduce pedestrian deaths.

Marvin Reed 12 year old son of Mr and Mrs Henry Reed was badly cut last Thursday on barbed wire while visiting Nodaway area. Stitches removed from neck yesterday at Corning. back and leg wounds to heal in about ten days. Pony fell and threw him into the wire. cuts mostly on back with neck wound healing satisfactorily.

Free Horse Show Returns on July 8 in Anita Park

The annual horse show scheduled for June 22 will be held Sunday July 8 at 7 30 p m in Anita City Park south of the depot Weather permitting. There are 13 classes with four ribbons per class and a $1 prize per pony entry. Grand parade opens the event sponsored by the Anita Saddle Club and the Greater Anita Club.

Hope For New Doctor In Anita Soon

The Economic Development Committee of the Greater Anita Club has reviewed credentials of young medical doctors to attract a physician to Anita, which has been without a doctor since Dr. G. M. Adair’s death. Several inquiries responded to committee ads and progress is promising.

Framework Nears Completion At Anita Sales Barn

The Anita Sales Barn framework rising rapidly near town, with completion expected by week’s end. Next week rafters and roof to start, interior work follows, and the barn aims to open by mid August after ground breaking in early May.

Lions Install Officers At Ladies Night

The Lions Club held a ladies night on Monday with fried chicken served by Congregational women. Twenty six attended as new officers were installed including president E. D Brock et al and secretary treasurer Donald Wiersma. A July 14 meeting plans a tree party at the recreation center to care for and fertilize about 160 trees planted six weeks earlier.

Interior of the Kohl and Lantz Briardale grocery store has been completely repainted with green walls and a white ceiling. The project began about two months ago and final brush touches were in progress this week.
