Granddaughter of Anita United in Marriage

Miss Marynelle Holmes daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn N Holmes of Guthrie Center and Chauncey H Carl of Des Moines were united in marriage at 4 00 Sunday afternoon at the Holmes home The bride a Guthrie Dener high school graduate attended the University of wa employed as a bookkeeper The groom a University of Iowa graduate has been with the law firm Swan Martin and Martin in Atlantic They will reside in Blair Nebraska where he will practice law Mrs Ellie Holmes of Anita is the bride's grandmother and Mayor Mrs J C Jenkins of Anita is a grandmother Lester Heckman his wife and two children of Kansas City Missouri visited the Holmes home and left for northern Minnesota Monday

Wallace Beery headlining Good Old Soak at Rialto

Wallace Beery stars in Good Old Soak at the Rialto Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, a screen version of Don Marquis Old Soak play. The cast includes Una Merkel Eric Linden Judith Barrett and Betty Furness with a Bay View Long Island setting and a Santa Anita race track sequence. Also on the bill are Our Gang comedy Two Too Young a band act Dancing on the Ceiling and the news reel.

Cass County Ranked 38th In State By Census Bureau

The census report shows Cass county in business and industry ranks thirty eight among all counties in the state. 1935 payrolls totaled 808000 with 1079 employees plus 760 active proprietors across sectors including manufacturing retail wholesale insurance real estate finance services hotels and miscellaneous. Iowa totals show 216876 employees and 214309000 in payrolls. A Chevrolet coupe owned by Leon Wheatley was damaged when he lost control near Anita. the car overturned, Mrs Wheatley injured mildly. A potash and sugar explosion at Joseph Vais farm near Anita sparked a fire but was contained with no extensive damage.

Iowa Health Bulletin Warns July Fourth Deadly Weekend

The state health department projects about twenty Iowa deaths over July 2 to 4 due to accidents sparked by the holiday on Sunday. Most fatalities stem from automobile crashes and drowning, with at least nine expected from each cause and one more possibly from firearms or fireworks. Wednesday is safest. open roads and pedestrians present major risks. A new baby born Wednesday, and KIA club reports follow.

John C Livingston Dies in Anita at 87

John Calvin Livingston 87 longtime Cass county resident died at 1 30 PM Tuesday at his daughter’s home in Anita He was born in Newcastle Pennsylvania Aug 10 1850 moved to Iowa at 19 settled near Lewis Cass county in 1873 He married Alice Conrad in 1876 They had four children Lew Atlantic Ethel Lewis Mary Lowden and Hugh Anita Survived by one brother Elmer Livingston Newell SD eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren He served as Lewis mayor eight years and belonged to the Church of Christ Funeral plans were not yet set but services and burial were expected in Lewis

1937 Poll Tax in Rural Districts Must Be Collected

Attorney General opinion maintains the 1937 Rural Poll Tax was due January 1 1937 and remains collectible despite repeal of the rural poll tax law by Senate File No 21. City road taxes are unaffected. Additionally notes social items including Carroll visits and Ponies bred in Corning and a Colorado marriage near Julesburg.

Judge sentences eight Atlantic Anita youths in string of robberies

In Cass county district court Judge Grover Brown sentenced or released eight boys from Atlantic and Anita for participating in a wave of twenty eight robberies. Raymond Johnson and John Wilburn got five years each at Eldora's industrial training school with bench paroles to follow. Manley Walling Gerald Dean and George Vale drew five years at hard labor in Anamosa. Kenneth Johnston pleaded not guilty and remains jailed on 3 000 bond awaiting September trial. Peter Clark had parole revoked and will stay at Eldora until age 21. Arthur Lett had charges dropped and was released. The judge lectured the youths on societal rules and warned others against crime.

Tearing Up Old Pavement on East Main St in Anita

Workmen are busy this week tearing out the old brick pavement on East Main Street from Elm Street east to Evergreen cemetery. The street will be resurfaced with concrete and detours are in place on No. 6. Dusty conditions irritate motorists and the operation will take about six weeks to finish. Also working on the south half of a nearby bridge. Weimer Pearson recovering after major operation at Jones hospital in Atlantic last Thursday.

Hiatt Named Commercial Instructor at Anita High School

Miss Hilda Hiatt of Richland Iowa is appointed commercial instructor for the Anita high school for the coming year by the board of directors. She previously held a similar post at Essex Iowa for eight years. She is not related to Miss Ruby Hiatt of Sidney who taught in the local high school last year.
