Iowa Senate rearranges chairmanships after inauguration

Ranking members were elevated to chairmanships in the Thirty-third Iowa General Assembly. President Clarke announced standing committees with few changes, retaining old chairs while promoting members to lead major panels including Ways and Means, Judiciary, Appropriations, Railroads, Agriculture, Schools, Cities and Towns, Highways, Elections, Telegraphs and Telephones, Corporations, Printing, Suppression of Intemperance, Labor, Public Health, Constitutional Amendments, and more. The biennial executive council report is being mailed, and Hampton appoints to Pension Bureau.

Take Oaths Second Time In Iowa’s Capitol

Des Moines reports the January inaugural of Gov. B. F. Carroll and Lt. Gov. George W. Clarke with oath by Chief Justice John C. Sherwin. A large audience attended as Carroll urged a Greater Iowa, more business, and manufacturing to keep youths in state. The flag raising and capitol reception followed, with officials and dignitaries present.

Arrested widow admits fatal poisoning of infant in New York Central station

Reports say Mrs. Edith Melcher of Schenectady confessed to police that on January 6 in a swamp near Albany she gave her 1-year-old son George carbolic acid, causing death.
