Anita Council Proceedings In Regular Session

The Anita Town Council met December 2 1957 with Acting Mayor Jewett and five councilmen present. Minutes and treasurer reports were approved and bills allowed. A cigarette permit cancellation was denied then granted for others and a temporary transfer resolution moved and adopted shifting funds between General and Sanitation funds to cover costs.

Local notes from Anita era include mill reopen plans

Fifty years ago Conley Worthing and Burkhart offered six pounds of beans for a quarter and Turkey coffee at 15c a pound. Adam Haist Jr. returned, with pending plans to reopen the mill bought by Jesse McElsfresh. Mrs. Hansen of Omaha visited Anita relatives as Mrs. S. W. Clark prepared dressmaking from two parlors over Wagner's. A dam on Turkey Creek above the east bridge by E. G. Allanson encouraged skaters as water backed two miles. Sherman F. Myers visited the Anita Tribune and Ed L. Richardson was manager. Anita was at high tide.

A Massena resident Harry Fickle reportedly drank seventeen bottles of soda in one evening during Prohibition. Local businessman A R Kohl sold six and a half pounds of leaf tar for a dollar at Briardale Grocery. M Millhollin served as mayor and Wayne Greene led the Christian Church as Leora Miars.

Ten years ago in January 1948 Mr and Mrs William H Dorate prepared for their Golden Wedding Anniversary after a 1898 Atlantic marriage. Also noted was Marvin Scholls birthday and a 630 waffle supper with Cecil Scholl Harvey Scholl Robert Duff and Arthur Duff guests. Red Cross first-aid instructors rise in Cass County

A year ago on January 17 1957 Cass County reported nine certified Red Cross first aid instructors including Jerry Redburn Wilbur Matthews Bill Parker and Junior Karns. Anita High School girls basketball recently lost to Wiota 54 to 36. Local grocers Krasne's Kohl and Lantz's Briardale sold two pound dressed chickens at 79 cents and a pound of frozen perch at 39 cents. Margaret and David Ash edited the Anita Tribune.
