County Officials Shakeup In Atlantic Area

The Atlantic area board approved changes in county officials including a new chairman and deputies. Pay scales for deputies, foremen, and assistants were set, with several positions at fixed monthly rates. A county-wide assessors’ meeting discussed 1935 livestock and land assessments, and a weather and crop report was noted.

Cass County Officers Hold First Annual Get-Together

About seventy-five Cass county officers and families attended the first annual gathering at the Atlantic courthouse. County Attorney Earl Holton served as toastmaster as events included toasts, a bountiful dinner, recitations and talks. A.M. Zellmer and Mr. Edwards received gifts as retiring officials. Activities ended with community singing, dancing and cards.

Bill Paige 65 Dies at Creston After Illness

William H Paige 65 a former resident of this vicinity died last Wednesday night at Community hospital in Creston from ruptured ulcers of the stomach. Born July 1 1871 in Audubon county Extra he lived in Eureka township Adair county and Benton township before moving to Creston three years ago. He leaves eight children with seven grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters. Funeral held 2 PM Saturday at Eureka Center with burial in Eureka Center cemetery.

Darrow Family Hurt in Iowa Head On Crash

Six people are hospitalized in Newton Iowa after a late Saturday head on collision on Highway 6 six miles east of the city. W I Darrow 59 of Anita suffered a fractured vertebrae and severe cuts. his wife 54 a fractured left arm and right leg. Harlan A Heibner 31 of Estherville had bruises and a fractured right knee. Beulah Coleman 34 of Estherville and her daughters Carol 7 and Grace 4 were cut and bruised. The Darrrows were returning from Anita to Anamosa with daughter Evelyn who had been visiting. The cause of the crash is unknown. Earl Johnston was called to Dexter Sunday by his father J E Johnston's death.

State Farm Bureau to Discuss Rural Electrification and Cooperatives

The Iowa State Farm Bureau convention at the Shrine Temple Des Moines January 20 21 and 22 will feature three main topics rural electrification cooperatives and the national farm program. County resolutions will guide state committee recommendations to 100 directors. The bureau highlights its leadership in rural electrification and cooperative farming while awaiting national policy guidance on soil conservation crop adjustment and warehousing.

Inland Empire nickname proposed for Iowa by commission

The Greater Iowa commission urged renaming Iowa the Inland Empire to reflect vast resources and potential. Chairman Otto S. Muntz called Hawkeye’s meaning obscure, noting the 1838 origin and lack of formal adoption. Action would seek Iowa legislature approval. George Schwenneker was visiting Osage. Floyd Dement announced a free Rialto Theatre moving picture show at 2:30 pm Thursday. Anna Ealy married John Bear at St. Joseph’s in Wiota with Bernard Kurtenbach and Melvin Mailander as witnesses. The newlyweds will reside in Anita. Hal Nolan and son Charles were injured when their car veered into a ditch near Adair. Mrs. Nolan had minor injuries.
