New mayor Tom Burns leads a council including Lex Eddy Wilbur Matthews Carl Moore T R Waller and Wayne Jewett with William Boedeker Solon Karns and Hans Christensen continuing in roles.
Salvation Army service corps announces progress toward the $225 quota from annual appeal letters. The fund drive asks those who have not mailed in their contributions to do so promptly, sending to local treasurer W. T. Meltien.
Anita ami of the Crowd Observation Post will sit actively next Monday at the observation station on the Anita school building. A six hour schedule with two persons on each two person shift will operate daily from 4 to 10. Sgt John Roberts explained standardized procedures and weather reporting. Post Super Bob Mackrill leads captains for each day from Monday to Sunday plus Lillian Phillips as Chief Observer. Citizens are invited to fill two hour shifts between 4 and 10 daily to support national defense and extend post hours as staffing allows.
Pvt Joe Redburn stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri will depart soon for the South Pacific. Mrs Redburn visited her husband and Joe is the son of Mr and Mrs Jerry Redburn. William Pollack, son of Rowley Pellocks Sr, promoted to private first class. Jerry Sorensen, son of Sterling Sorensens, on leave from Sunday before Christmas to Christmas Day. Pet Jack Shannon on ten day leave from Georgia. Spent Christmas Eve with Maurice Shannons at Ada Nayas home and with relatives. Also home for Christmas Eve was Waytie Shannon.
Onawa’s Vesper Lodge No 223 AT & AM hosted a grand lodge officer and four Anita visitors last Friday. Deputy Grand Master Leslie Edkly led the third degree on Ralph Stone, a son-in-law of Anita Thiele, with Clyde Smith delivering the third degree lecture. A strong turnout and enjoyable work marked the event.
After Christmas activities Anita High School students return to study. Eight senior girls issued the second edition of the school paper She Pen Tig. The Sun Ball, a long absent dance, was a success, sponsored by the Student Council with senior decor. Alumni and many students attended. Drake University and Simpson College reps visited seniors. Basic skills tests set for grades 4-8 next week. Miss Elizabeth Corpuz begins teaching multiple English and math classes. A joint boards of education meeting is planned for Monday Jan 9.
The Glen Lyon family, newly moved to Atlantic, relocated this week into the Chestett street home recently purchased from the C. Petersens.
The Anita chapters of Masons and Eastern Stars held a public joint installation Tuesday evening at the Masonic Hall for 1956 with 81 attendees. Harvey Schall was installed as Master of Obedience Lodge No. 380 AF and AJM by Harry Newney, with several officers named for both Masonic and Columna Chapter No. 127 installations.
The Argent and Mr and Mrs Hard Pleath welcomed Dagny Dean, a son born Thursday evening at Avantic Memorial Hospital at 6 32 weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces. The Worths have five other sons and one daughter.
The Extine family is moving into a newly purchased residence on Locust Street that was formerly occupied by Mrs. J T Stockhan and Mrs. Lillie Smither. They had lived above their Main Street grocery until a recent fire destroyed their living quarters.
