Prominent residents mourn deaths in Anita area

The town laments Mary C. Black 85 of Anita who died after visiting Morton Mills relatives. William H. Shultz died after a heart attack at his Anita home. Four Marx Brothers Return in Duck Soup at Anita Theatre

The Four Marx Brothers bring Duck Soup to Anita Theatre this weekend with showings Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinee at 2:30 pm. Directed by Leo McCarey the film features Raquel Torres Louis Calhern and Margaret Dumont with a strong supporting cast and includes the famous Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf. Short subjects The Little Broadcast I Like Mountain Music and a newsreel accompany the feature with 10 and 15 cent admissions for evenings and 10 and 25 cent for the Sunday matinee.

Armentrout Elected Chairman and New County Engineer

H G Armentrout was chosen chairman by the board of supervisors for the coming year. C A Zellmer took oath as the new second district member, defeating Frank Pelzer in 1982. Darrell Blake of Atlantic was selected as county engineer at 1500 dollars per year, succeeding Guy Canon after eight years in the post.

Farm Bureau Sues Cass County for 2000 Dollars

The Cass county farm bureau files a $2,000 suit against Cass county and the board of supervisors Frank Pelzer G H Allen Herman Ryan Truman Davis and H G Armentrout in Cass county district court. It seeks payment of 2000 alleged due under chapter 1938 code of Iowa for 1933, with demand made and refused. The petition notes over 200 bona fide members and annual dues over 1000, with G C Dalton of Atlantic as attorney.

Farm House Destroyed by Fire Near Wiota

Fire destroyed the nine room home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Morgan three miles northeast of Wiota around 10:30 last Wednesday morning. Attic origin likely from a defective chimney. neighbors aided saving most furniture though one upstairs bedroom was lost. Morgan family, Cass county pioneers, will rebuild and reside in Wiota temporarily. A second, smaller house near Anita was saved by Anita firemen, with shingles on the north gable damaged but covered by Forshay Insurance.

County Receives Large State Refunds for Road Projects

County Treasurer L A Breeling received 5655.50 from State Comptroller C B Murtagh as part of Iowa’s final $829,405.60 disbursement to 93 counties for right of way, bridges and culverts on primary roads. The last installment, some counties received under 5000, with Adair 7164.94 and Page 28341.89 among others.

Supervisors Visit State Hospitals on Annual Trip

Four members of the Caas county board of supervisors Frank Pelzer G H Allen Truman Davis and Herman Ryan along with County Attorney Earl Holton made their yearly tour to the state hospital for the insane at Clarinda and the state hospital for the feebleminded at Glenwood. H G Armentrout of Anita missed the trip due to illness, his throat ailment slowly improving. Dr G M Adair his wife and daughter Gael spent New Year’s Day in Atlantic with sister Mrs Fred Herbert and family.

Mrs. Etta Miller Dies in Atlantic Hospital at 64

Mrs. Etta Susan Miller 64 longtime Anita Wiota resident died at 10 30 AM Tuesday at an Atlantic hospital from heart disease. Born December 10 1869 in Fulton County Illinois she moved to Cass County in 1892 married August 18 1892 in Omaha to Jesse G Miller. Surviving seven children twenty grandchildren and several siblings. Services at Wiota Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev M J Rarick. burial in Wiota Cemetery. Funeral home arrangements in Atlantic.

Common Salt Said to Remove Furnace Soot and Boost Heat

An Iowa State expert reports common salt can clean soot from furnace pipes and chimneys as effectively as chemical blends, with a cupful sufficient for hot fires. No practical mix exists to improve coal burning or reduce ashes.
