Drake Offers Two Courses At Harlan and Atlantic

Drake university announces two courses through its Community College program. In Atlantic, General Science for Elementary Teachers will be taught by Miss Ellen Hartnett with first session January 9 at 6 30 PM in the Colt House. in Harlan, Nutrition and Physical Fitness will start January 15 at 7 30 PM in Harlan High School. Both courses run weekly through the spring semester for three and (credit details).

Former Anita Resident Dies

Ed L. Newton learned of the death of his sister-in-law Mrs L. L. Newton of Lander Wyoming. The deceased was Lulu Hohanshelt formerly of Anita and daughter of the late Rev W Hohanshelt longtime Ital Methodist pastor. She had attended a PEO Sisterhood convention in Philadelphia and fell ill while returning home.

Smoke damages Harris residence in New Year blaze

Mr and Mrs Myon Hervis spent New Years in the Anderson home when a faulty oil burner smoked heavily on their return Tuesday night. The house was filled with smoke and they are staying with the Harrises until insurance adjusters assess damages and cleaning can begin. Mrs Edith Schwenke left Friday for Long Beach California to spend the winter there.

Garden Club Announces Home Decoration Results

The Anita Home and Garden Club met at the VFW Hall on Monday to crown winners of the home decoration contest. First prize went to Mr and Mrs Eddie Davis, second to Mr and Mrs E. B. Luman, and third to Mayor and Mrs Alfred Dement. Thirty-five members attended with President Mrs Drexel Chadwick presiding. A garden quiz, won by Mrs Hans Moelck, Mrs Elton Christensen, and Mrs Ted Hansen, was hosted by Mrs Cecil Denne. January meeting theme is Let's go South and Meet the spring. Hosts will be Mrs Harry Phippen and Mrs Ethel Schlater.

Fire unit responds to Cecil Denny home blaze

At 7 40 Wednesday morning the Anita Fire Department was called to the Cecil Denny residence at the corner of Rose Hill Avenue and Lane. According to Jerry Read the incident involved a wiring problem and smoke.

Richter Burial Planned in Sac City and Anita

Death of Fred Richter of Sac City on New Year’s morning announced. funeral at 10:00 Friday in Sac City with burial in Evergreen Cemetery Anita. Sisters Mrs Louis Steele and Mrs Irene Karns traveled to Sac City to be with their sister. Graveside services expected here around 2:30 Friday. Anita Public School Gets Christmas Overhaul

Work during Christmas vacation scrubs ten rooms, three halls, and stairways. Janitors Bill Boedeker and Ralph Biges and Supt Fatka completed sealing, waxing, and buffing. Kenneth Turner and Frank Neighbors install shelves and a work table in the new third floor library, with books and supplies due in a couple of weeks.

Two Families Injured In Anita Car Crash

A New Years Day collision near Anita on a gravel road four miles south of Highway 4 involved Lowell Hargin and Virgil Carlson. Hargin’s wife Lucille and 14 month old Richard were injured, with Richard severely cut and requiring stitches. Mrs Hargin and the child remained hospitalized in Atlantic. Carlson’s wife and daughter-in-law were also hospitalized with Mrs Virgil Carlson in more serious condition. Drivers suffered only bruises. An unidentified passerby assisted the Carlsons to reach a hospital after their car stalled near the highway.

Golden wedding in Anita marks 50 years

Louis Laartz aged 76 and Ma Laartz aged 69 celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary January 8. An open house will be at Anita Methodist Church January 6 from 1 to 5 PM. They formerly lived on an 8 farm near Atlantic and moved to Anita after retiring from farming. They have two children, Raysmond Laartz and Mrs B McD mott, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
