Grand Jurors Drawn for January Term in Cass County

A list of Cass County grand jurors selected for the January term by Judge Ernest Miller of the district court includes C W Clardy Phil Smith Cecil Skipton and others. Jurors are instructed to report at 9:00 a m on January 23 with additional duty dates noted for January 28 and later sessions. Removal of CCC Barracks Moves to Fairgrounds

V S Petersen chief technician tells Atlantic Cass county chamber that CCC barracks will be removed from Cass county funds and relocated as stable barracks at the fairgrounds a tent setup possible if soil erosion camps locate locally. Cass county’s soil work need exceeds camps available and location preference shifts to counties with no prior erosion work. County records show 1934 lisings exceed 1931 and 1933 figures, with 160 marriages granted last year compared to 122 in 1933 and 54 in 1931, indicating growth in court activity and local governance records.

Mike Farrell Opens Office For Farm Census Work

Mike Farrell, district supervisor, has opened an office in the federal building at Council Bluffs to organize the federal farm census for the district. He reports about 5,000 applications for enumerator jobs but will hire only 124. A three person committee will sift applications, with Farrell and a Commerce representative as two members. Actual census taking begins in January, covering Adair, Adams, Audubon, Cass, Fremont, Guthrie, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, Shelby, and Taylor counties.

Louise Trumbull Weds Don McKay In Olean New York

Miss Louise Trumbull daughter of Mr and Mrs L B Trumbull of this city married Don McKay son of Mr and Mrs W H McKay at the groom's parents home in Olean New York at 10 30 on Friday morning Dec 21 Rev A Frank Houser officiated with Mrs McKay ceding the music and Yolanda Questa singing O Promise Me The bride formerly of Anita studied in Rock Island and worked in supervising home talent plays while the groom worked in the Times Herald Olean advertising department After a honeymoon in Anita the couple will first live in Olean with Mrs McKay continuing work with the Ingram company until April per the story.

271 Is Number of New Marne Atlantic Highway

County Engineer Darrell Blake announced that the primary road between Atlantic and Marne is numbered 271. Stop signs go up along seven miles from Rock Island tracks in Marne to U.S. highway 6 at Seventh and Poplar in Atlantic. The Iowa State Highway Commission plans to grade bridge and surface the remaining dirt road between Maine and Walnut early next spring. Over four miles have been surfaced with crushed rock from the Dr Haake farm quarry west of Lewis. Road surfacing costs are about 12 000 dollars per mile with grading around 10 000 and rock hauling about 2 000 per mile.

Anita Fire Loss in 1934 Reaches 4253.58 Dollars

Anita Fire Department reported 1934 fire losses totalled 4253 dollars and 58 cents. Ten alarms were answered that year, with the Victoria Hotel fire marking the largest loss. Average annual loss for six years stood at 6602 dollars and 18 cents, while total costs for ten fires were 2348 dollars and 60 cents below the six year average. Repairs continued on the Victoria Hotel after an early morning blaze.

Winners Named in Christmas Lighting Contest

Glen A. Roe won first prize in class B residential and Mrs. A. A. Johnson took first in class C business in the Iowa Electric Co sponsored contest. Second and third prizes went to Jee V. Rongers and Mrs Ivadel Rhoads in residential and West Iowa Telephone Co and Mrs C A Pool in business. Judges were Dr G M Adair Mrs W T Biggs and George Shaffer. The company thanked all contestants for cooperation. The 2-1-2-1-2 club hosted a covered dish dinner at Harold McDermott's home with guests Mr and Mrs Chester A Long.

$500 Suit Filed Against Former Sheriff A. Odem

Isadore Levine a local junk dealer filed a $500 suit against former Cass county sheriff Aden Odem and the Fidelity and Deposit company of Maryland. The claim concerns an automobile Levine says the sheriff removed from Levine’s business April 25 and later returned to a claimant from Omaha. Roscoe Jones represents Levine.

Burglary at Casey Store Seized $150 in Apparel Stolen

Casey Jan 2 Wearing apparel valued at 150 dollars was taken from EK E Jefferson men s furnishings and shoe store. Burglars smashed a rear window and a door while three strangers were seen in the business district. Sheriff E E Kimble investigated, finding crowbar marks but no fingerprints or clues. Vernon Joint co-owns the store with Jefferson.

Cass Tax Books Delayed For Treasurer Meeting

Cass county board heard from County Auditor Jennie M Ward that the 1934 tax books will not be ready for use for several days. Tax collection for 1934 cannot begin until records are completed, marking the second such delay in the county’s history. Extra help will be hired to expedite the process, as moving into the new courthouse and space constraints hindered completion by month’s start.

Chas. Thompson Dies Former Anita Resident Passed Away in Des Moines

The remains of Chas. A. Thompson were brought to Anita for burial in Evergreen cemetery after his death early Friday at his Des Moines home. A former meat dealer in Anita, he moved to Des Moines about ten years ago and is survived by his two daughters, Vinnie Aldrich and Juanita Lowell. Mrs. Thompson had died months earlier. A New Year’s party at Joseph Gissibl’s Lincoln township home featured an oyster supper and games as the year turned.
