The Anita High School debate team placed with three wins at Clarinda in a bin debate on promoting a Western Hemisphere Common Market. Anita earned 34 individual points led by Kevin Burke with top ratings, while Clarinda had 31 and Audubon 29.
Mrs. Elton Christensen, recovering from major surgery at Immanual Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, expects discharge soon. Mrs. Don Petersen, former Atlantic resident, entered Methodist Hospital in Des Moines Tuesday and had surgery Wednesday morning.
The Pyhtian Sisters met at the Temple with thirty one present. New member Mrs Earl Heath joined the group. A school of instruction is planned for March 4 and the KP banquet is set for February 13 at Anita Methodist Church. Lunch was served by Mrs William Stockham Mrs Frank Neighbors and Mrs Leland Morgan.
Douglas Holland Kay Johnson and Mary Mclaughlin spent between semesters with their parents all are students of State University of Iowa at Iowa City. Alan Burke spent between semesters with his parents Mr and Mrs Gail Burke. Alan is a student at Notre Dame University Indiana.
Four accidents, attributed to icy roads, occurred in or near Anita this week. Notable incidents include Jerry Karns rolling a station wagon on highway 90 near Forrest Wilson farm. Rich Krogh hitting a light post. Richard Stanley damaging cars and a light post. and Gary Simon sliding into a light fixture near Phillips 66. No injuries reported. speed suspected in several cases and charges prepared against Stanley by town marshal Hans Christensen.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Jensen and Phyllis spent Sunday at the home of their daughter and son in law Kendall Petersen and baby in Maryville Missouri Kendall has enrolled the last semester at Northwest Missouri State College as a junior Mrs Petersen has secured employment in a drug store for the present
Harold C. DeKay, county savings bonds chairman, promotes taking 1962 tax refunds as Series E savings bonds. Taxpayers can mark the box on form 1040 to receive bonds with any remainder issued as a check. Joint returns become joint ownership as "John or Mary Smith" on the bond registration.
Jan Long was unintentionally omitted from the list of contestants in Tuesday’s home speech contest held Jan 29. Long participated in the humorous division with the selection Rah Rah Rah.
The OES will hold a family night on Monday February 11 featuring a 6:30 basket supper followed by a program.
Exira edged Anita 49 to 47 in Wiota as Anita failed to score in the fourth quarter. Dennis Sandhorst led Anita with 22 points, Nancy McLuen added 17, Colleen Kelly held Susan Petersen to 19 for Extra, and Linda Mayberry scored 8 for Anita while Extra outhustled and outshot the hosts.
Mr and Mrs George McDermott and family relocate Friday to Creston where he becomes manager of a Purina feed mix and grind plant He had served as Anita Farmers Coop manager since fall 1960 and is a part er of the Creston Purina plant Walt Glynn Jr also moves to Creston to work for Purina Company.
The Study club will meet Tuesday February 12 at 2 pm in the Elementary school. Founders Day will be observed at this meeting. Mrs George Kopp will present Bring Out The Best In Children and Mrs Clyde Watkins will review Parents and the Veto Power. A Fourders Day Tea will also be held.
Dallas Davis and Cy Stephen son, directors of Farmers Co op Elevator Co of Anita, attended FELCOs 387th annual meeting and Grain Dealers convention at Hotel Fort Des Moines. FELCO serves Iowa Minnesota Illinois and South Dakota cooperatives. A new petroleum product line was announced and FELCO general manager Morel Stientjes reported fiscal year sales of 26481295 dollars with net savings allocated and return to members.
The Anita boys beat Adair Casey 79 41 at WIota to extend their winning streak to 12. Bill Richter led with 24 points, Don Fletcher 15, Gary Jensen 12, and Dennis Sims 10 as Anita built early leads and pressed the pace. They meet Carson Macedonia Friday for the conference title with a possible outright championship.
Mrs Clarence Heck Birge of Central Valley California died Sunday January 27 after a long illness Funeral services held January 30 at Lawn Crest Memorial Park Redding She was born Anna Rose Heck Birge March 21 1896 in Anita and married Clarence Birge They farmed in Nebraska Oregon and California She is survived by her husband a sister Mrs Pauline Fredrick of Seattle and several nieces and nephews Also sister in law to Mrs Alvah Heck and Mrs Margaret Heck She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers and one sister.
The Cass County 4-H youth committee chairs a first joint annual meeting for boys and girls on Thursday April 25 at 7 30 p m. Raymond Tanner reports the event will elect county officers initiate honorary members and highlight the club year. Up to 10 boys and 10 girls may run, each club may campaign for a candidate.
The report shows patrons spending increased totals of 1 124 319 dollars with overall sales in feed seed fertilizer farm chemicals and other farm supplies up 24149 over the prior year as traders note robust demand.
Mardesen's Paint and Wallpaper store is open again after a two month shutdown. The reopening restores a local supplier for residential paint and wallpaper needs.
Loren J. Duensing elected Justice of the Cole Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta at Drake University. A Drake law senior, he also belongs to Beta Gamma Sigma and the Drake University Student Bar Association. The Duensings reside at 1517 28th Street in Des Moines.

Anita High School girls claim the Southwest Iowa Conference basketball crown by defeating Adair Casey 58 to 39 at Wiota. Linda Mayberry scored 35 and Nancy McLuen 15 as Anita led 19 7 at first break and held a 37 28 edge after three quarters. Connie Douglas had 17 for Adair Casey. The Spartanettes advance to face A-C in the opening round of the girls sectional tournament on Monday on the A-C floor.
Lincoln Township joins the winners circle with Benton and Washington townships, reaching a 39 member target on Feb 1 led by Ervin Beschorner and workers Dale Schaaf Earl Miller and Kermit Bailey. Cass County trails by under 100 to reach the county goal as drives continue toward Feb 15.
Clyde Pratt left Saturday for Grand Junction Colorado to spend several weeks with his daughter Mrs Dave Flatt. Mr and Mrs William Crawford left over last weekend for Orange Lake Florida to spend a few weeks.
Mr and Mrs Burl Roots left Monday to spend the week with their daughter Mr and Mrs Charles Robinson in Indianapolis Indiana.
Mr and Mrs Lynn Dorsey have returned home from a ten day vacation in Corpus Christi and Aransas Pass They visited the homes of friends and relatives and saw many points of interest.
The Town Girls High School Athletic Union moved the sectional basketball tourney from Anita to Adair-Casey due to Wiota gym access uncertainty. Opening games include Cumberland-Massena vs Griswold and Anita vs Adair Casey with finals set for Feb 15 at Adair-Casey. Wiota gym would have hosted, but board inaction stalled permission and rent remains $50 per night with concessions staying with Wiota.
The calendar lists events from February including Congs Fellowship at the parsonage and trustee meeting at 7 30 p m, Holy Cross Ladies Aid at 2 p m, and the Past Chiefs club gathering at Elva Steinmetz’s Lincoln Two. Other items include Homemakers at George Miller’s home basketball at Carson-Macedonia and 4-H activities with OES family night.
Robert L. Hall Jr. was promoted to private first class in Germany where he serves with the 9th Chemical Company in Mannheim. He joined the Army in December 1961, completed basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado, and arrived overseas in May 1962. The 20 year old attended Anita High School.
Mr and Mrs Leo Christensen relocate from a farm northeast of Anita to a new home in West Des Moines where both will be employed.
