St Marys Catholic Church Pastor Father Joseph A Devlin holds 8 30 am Sunday Mass. Viota church offers 10 am Mass and 11 am Sunday school with Christmas programs and world service offerings. Choirs rehearse Wednesdays with Junior and Adult groups. Senior MYF caroling and events planned through December 26.
North Massena Baptist Church led by Pastor Duane Dodson announces morning worship at 9 30. Sunday school at 10 30. Thursday night prayer meeting at 7 30 held Monday evening.
Christian Science Churches announce the Sunday Lesson-Ser mon titled Is the Universe Including Man Evolved by Atomic Force The Golden Text from Amos speaks of the Lord God of hosts forming mountains creating wind and knowing man’s thoughts The service is set for Sunday December 22
Congregational Church led by Pastor Charles S Yoak offers Sunday School at 10:00 and Church Service at 11:00 with Bible Study at 3:30. The Pilgrim Fellowship meets Monday and Wednesday at 7:30, chair practice, and Thursday afternoon hosts include Gertrude Sims Meta Miller and Marg Mikkelsen.
Church of Christ Mayo Proctor lists Sunday service at 9 30 with Sunday School at 10 30. Youth meeting is held every Monday night at 7 00.
Holy Cross Lutheran Church led by Pastor W H Kohlmeier holds a 9:00 worship service followed by 10:00 Sunday School and Bible Class.
Anita Tribune notes a past era with reminiscences of Worthing Bros prices 8c for broom and 20c syrup per quart. It recalls Tidrick's store oatmeal, clothespins, car corn offers, local residents celebrations and church leaders including Joel N. Boone and Harold D Butts, marking community memory from 1947.
Fifty years ago the jury ruled for defendant Sherm F. Myers in the libel case brought by Walter E. Haynes. The Boatright family attended the Stuart wedding of Bert Boatright, nephew of H. E. Boatright. Newlyweds included Pearl Davis and Clarence Gochanour. Myers edited the Tribune and served as postmaster, with Ed Richardson as manager.
Edwin Cate was absent from school due to sickness. Mr and Mrs Charles Faulkner left Anita for San Jose to visit Mrs Faulkner's parents. Mr and Mrs Addison Garside visited from Atlantic to see Addison's brother Joe and family. Clardy and Sheley ran Farmers Supply Co. John C Voorhees led Anita Bank as president. H J Wilkins served as Congregational pastor and E A Thomas of the M E. Walter F Budd edited the Anita Tribune.
Thirty years ago Christmas visitors to Mr. and Mrs. Ed L. Newton of Anita included Glen Newton and family from Nevada Iowa Hobart Newton and daughter from Stuart Iowa Charles Salmon and daughter from Cambridge Ohio C R Asay of Hawarden Canada Glen Holmes and family of Guthrie Center The town had seven doctors including G M Adair H E Campbell C H Johnson P T Williams M M Gammon J W Macklin and C E Harry C O Lacey owned the Rialto Theatre with films by Janet Gaynor and Richard Dix. Walter P F Budd was editor of the Anita Tribune.
Twenty years ago this week December 23 1937 Mr and Mrs Leonard Rork welcomed a baby boy named James Leonard Rork. Mr and Mrs Ed Wheeler moved from Anita to make a new home in Campbell Colorado. Mayor and Mrs J C Jenkins planned their 50th wedding anniversary Christmas Day. Lawrence Jewett of Carroll and Wayne Jewett visited the Anita home of Mr and Mrs Wayne Jewett. Coffee sold for 30 cents a pound at Schaake store. Crawford’s Farm Store offered Fr M J O Connor as pastor of St Mary’s Church and D Allen Martin of the Central Church of Christ with Thomas B Dixon of the Congregation.
Five years ago Anita residents recall Elmer's Jensen groceries and local price marks while Boedekers receive long distance news from Japan about son Robert wounded in Korea. St Marys Altar Rosary Society met at Mrs Spies home and prayed for Rev Fr Connor and the sick. Local pastors and church leaders are listed with small community notes.
25 December 1952 Pvt and Mrs Eugene Kopp welcomed Bethel Gene Kopp at Atlantic Memorial Hospital The infant’s father served at Fort Kobbe C Z Grandparents are Roy Scholl Frank Kopp Mrs Chris Jensen celebrated a golden wedding anniversary Anita Remembers recalls a 1912 marriage at Andrew Wiegands home The Town Publisher notes Mabel Mergenthaler antics in the Tribune shop and Bud Johnson’s question about page exposure The Ashes edited the Tribune during this period.
A year ago on December 27 1956 Alvin Wahlert and wife welcomed a son David Allan Wahlert. Larry Behnnken and wife welcomed a daughter Dana D Behinken. Ramon Vamerano and wife welcomed a daughter in Eugene Colorado. Dor is Marie Kline and Cloyce L Heistand recently wed. she is Anita High School 1951 graduate and Iowa State College Ames alum. Margaret and David Ash edited the Anita Tribune.
