Condemned woman Mrs Rogers was hanged at Windsor prison Friday afternoon with a restrained crowd watching. The execution followed a denied reprieve after a long legal effort. She remained calm throughout the process, was pronounced dead about fourteen minutes after the drop, and officials noted a swift fatal fall with limited suffering.
Senator John T. Mitchell of Portland Oregon died Friday after four teeth were removed at a dental office the previous day. The death followed severe hemorrhage and complications from diabetes and other ailments, despite physicians’ efforts with saline resuscitation.
At Centerville Missouri the jury found William Spaugh guilty of first degree murder and Mrs Mary Spaugh guilty of second degree murder for the killing of Sheriff Polk at Ironton on May 25. Mrs Spaugh was sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary.
Thieves entered the church of St Lawrence in Cassilina Torre Italy and attempted to remove a Michelangelo bas relief of the twelve apostles using chisels. The effort failed but the artwork was badly defaced.
The board of managers of the national scheme for disabled volunteer soldiers presented its annual report to Congress in Washington.
