Federal control of railroads extended to five years

The Director General of Railroads McAdoo announced a five year extension of federal control over railroads or an early return of property to owners. Labor Secretary Wilson urged legislation for colonization and farming of public lands by soldiers returning from the army. A Washington dispatch notes 44 navy vessels lost since April 6 1917 with 12 sunk by submarines. Twenty nine battleships will remain in service after March 1 under Navy plans.
