Anita School Contract Bids in Des Moines Show Wide Range

Bids for a school expansion were tabulated with bids from firms in Des Moines and nearby cities. The lowest base bids totaled about 81,990 dollars, with higher bids from Atlantic and other contractors. Architect Keffer & Pires led the board’s review as officials awarded the contract to the successful bidder after Friday’s deadline. The project funds include bonds voted by the district and remaining costs for equipment, heating, and wiring. Thanksgiving Day attendance noted for area families as Biggs and Merle Turner families were guests.

Winners Share Cash Prizes At Saturday Drawing

Mrs Iva Grimstead won first prize ten dollars with Jesse R Chapman and Phil McLaughlin taking five and three dollars respectively. Jesse Taylor earned two dollars, and five one dollar prizes went to Max Lovell Edward Darrow Linda Christensen Walter Crow and Gene Kopp. Linda Christensen, visiting from Darlington Wisconsin, is granddaughter of the Christensens. A prior Wednesday drawing awarded sixteen dollars. the intended fifteen was increased by a double one dollar prize for Mrs Max Walker.

Ten Applicants in Contest For Postmaster in Anita

The civil service commission in Washington D C has announced ten candidates for Anita postmaster. Examinations will be held at the Atlantic post office building Saturday. Applicants include Mildred J Pine Ellsworth Parker John R Stuhr Sr Vera B Hook George O Smither Harold A McDermott John R Stuhr Jr Walter A Glynn Raymond A Burke and Elmer P Jensen. A new postmaster will likely be named from this list to take over after Ed L Newton's term ends January 19.

Lincoln Township Couple Injured in Auto Accident

Lincoln Township couple Mrs. Rollie N Way and her husband were injured in an auto crash five miles east of Corning on Highway 84. Mrs Way has a fractured hip and head injuries and remains hospitalized. Mr Way was treated and released the same night. A second incident near Casey left several people with minor injuries after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 6.

Death of Lyle Lovell Follows Farm Accident

Lyle Lovell 22 of near Atlantic dies in Waterloo hospital from injuries after being hurled onto frozen ground when his team ran away as he picked corn on a Dike area farm. Fractured skull cerebral hemorrhage and injured vertebrae cited. Survived by mother Mrs Walters Root, father Alfred Lovell, and grandparents. Funeral 1:30 at Atlantic funeral home with Rev. Ralph B. Noyce officiating. interment in Adair cemetery.

Pig Nose Count Kicks Off in Cass County This Week

The annual pig nose count for the 1935 corn hog program began Monday in Cass County. Three supervisors per township oversee forty eight supervisors countywide to verify farmers meet 25 to 90 percent of 1932 1933 hog averages. Payments flow from the processing levy. Anita Literary Club hosts event at Bell Apartments, Fourth and Walnut, 7:30 p.m. with Mrs. D C Bell as hostess. A play will feature the program led by Mrs. W T Biggs and others.

High School Notes PTA and Sports on Tap

The High School PTA meets at the auditorium tonight at 8:00 with Dr. John H. Peck from the State Health Department as guest speaker. The school basketball season opens Friday at Menlo, with first and second teams traveling and key lettermen Nelson Inhofe Vetter Long leading a hopeful squad. The Carlisle home opener is slated for Friday December 13 against Cumberland. Also urging purchase of Christmas Seals to fight tuberculosis.

Cass County Corn Hog Checks Arrive for Farmers in Atlantic

A total of 122 Cass county corn hog benefit payment checks totaling 12 122.65 arrived in Atlantic Monday morning and are being distributed to farmers at the allotment committee office on the county courthouse. The payments, mostly complete, include 18 partnership contracts. 244 646.60 in total to date. Also Anita Temple members elected officers for the coming year at the K P hall and 6 000 feet of Anita dirt streets will be gravelled under a federal PWA project with $20 per block assessed to property owners.

AAA Organize County Committees for Long Term Plan

County agricultural planning committees will be formed in all Iowa counties in December to assist the US Department of Agriculture in crafting a long-term agricultural plan. The project, led by Murl McDonald and supported by state and college staff, aims to balance production with market demand, conserve soil, and simplify adjustments, with county input feeding into a final Iowa report for Washington.
