Cotton and corn crop prospects stay high as wheat moves freely, stocks gain slightly, and wool and leather markets show mixed movement.
Rumor resurfaces that Queen Victoria will retire and let the Prince of Wales take the throne. Court circles discuss her health and age as she reportedly laments this is her last London visit amid Princess Maud and Prince Charles of Denmark wedding events.
A trial in Avram Austria of the Stenjeve band numbering thirty six resulted in nineteen condemned to death two women among them, nine to imprisonment and eight acquitted. Separate reports note a minister injured in Texarkana, a divorce case, American deaths in Peru, bicyclist arrest in Chicago and a boy reclaimed from tramps. The era also covers a silk firm assignment, a German mine purchase, a fireworks factory disaster in Austria and other local incidents.
A Reading Railroad express collided with a Pennsylvania Railroad excursion train four miles from Atlantic City New Jersey killing and wounding around a hundred passengers. The Reading engine was wrecked and many cars were crushed. Edward Farr the Reading engineer died at his post. Telegraph operator William Thurlow was arrested pending inquiry.
Joseph Greibler of Minneapolis, a top bicycle circuit rider, was killed at Lima Ohio on the 99th. He likely fainted from heat after leaving the track and crashing into the crowd, being thrown against a fence. He died about a short time later while leading the half mile open race.
The Oliver's Tenth Street iron mill in Pittsburg, long nonunion since 1802, signed the amalgamated scale for gamers and finishers. About 450 workers will return to work, a major victory for the workforce and union organizers.
Flood ruins the forty mile Catskill branch from Trinidad California to the Maxwell land grant in New Mexico, affecting the Union Pacific Denver and Gulf Railroad. Also reports a missing Cincinnati woman, a summer resort accident at Lake Ottozea, and Cuban exile movements.
Wreck of Chicago and Alton fast mail train No 33 near Cazenovia derailed coaches and damaged track. All passengers escaped miraculously as they were in the smoker which stayed upright while debris and fallen rails trapped parts of cars. Several incidents of fatal and near fatal accidents follow in the report.
A gang of about thirty prisoners at Fort Leavenworth broke for a cornfield during a farm shift. Guards fired with shotguns. all but three surrendered. East was fatally shot after being wounded six times. Two others were badly wounded but not fatally. Warden French restored order in the yard during a second mutiny attempt. NOT A VICTORY FOR THE MEN.
A severe Monday night storm in Pittsburg Pennsylvania caused extensive damage including collapsed roofs, wrecked houses, and blown steeples. Daylight revealed ten deaths thirty six injured and property losses around one hundred thousand dollars with widespread ruin in Pittsburg and surrounding areas.
Two young women Miss Webber and Miss Phares aged 18 or 19 drowned while bathing in a pond on a Milton farm owned by the father of Miss Webber. No witnesses. their prolonged absence prompted a search leading to the discovery of the bodies. Both were prominent in Van Buren County society.
A man named Frank Pierson attacked his parents with a razor at their Iowa Falls home early Monday. He wounded his father, then killed his mother before slashing his own throat. He survived though in serious condition. his mother is in critical danger. Pierson, recently released from Independence asylum, is deemed insane. His brother Albert reportedly died by suicide in Chicago last spring.
The Cedar Rapids man McGregor challenges Iowa’s July 4 anti cigarette law which forbids manufacture sale and import of cigarettes. Judge Sanborn grants a writ of habeas corpus while the AG plans a immediate appeal to the US Supreme Court, arguing state power to regulate commerce.
The five year old son of Will Marlan of Jefferson escaped serious harm after falling into an eighty foot well with a sixteen inch diameter. A 12 year old rescuer squeezed in, tied a rope, and pulled both boys to the surface. The elder boy suffered severe shoulder lacerations, while the younger was uninjured.
The state auditor reports a sharp drop in cattle hogs and sheep versus last year with cattle herds down from 8 278 000 to 2 282 000 hogs from 3 805 000 to 2 835 000 while other stock declines are smaller. Despite lower prices the total value remains nearly the same, but the outlook hints at further declines next year as raisers sell out and cease breeding.

A disastrous railroad collision near Atlantic City between West Jersey and Reading lines killed at least forty and wounded about sixty. An express from Philadelphia collided with a Bridgeton bound excursion train at a diagonal crossing, tearing cars apart and overwhelming hospitals with the injured. Rescue efforts raced through the night as relief trains arrived and passengers described the chaos and fear.
