The annual meeting of the Cemetery Association will be held at the hall in Anita, Iowa, on Monday, May 3, 1908, starting at 8:00. Reports will be read, officers elected for the year, and all business disposed of by vote of a secretary.
A local fire department announces a meeting on Thursday evening April 29 at an unspecified time. Secretary Roxy H. ENEtx urges attendance for department business and related matters in Anaman Place.
The Anita Board of Education elected Clarence M. Parker as Superintendent. A partial list of teachers includes Miss Ethel Glass for 6th and 7th grades, Miss Ruby Brewer for 4th and 6th, Miss Josie Marshall for 4th and 6th, Miss Emma McIntyre for Second Primary, Mrs. J.A. Linehan for First Primary, and Mrs. Della Winder for South Side Primary. three positions remain to be filled.
The two year old child of Dr and Mrs R A Weston is in a Omaha hospital in critical condition after being taken there by the parents last Saturday for constant care and the best medical treatment.
Howard McCarty son of Mr and Mrs Isaac McCarty died April 22 1908 after a brief illness from complications of diseases He was 5 years 4 months and 11 days old Funeral services were held at the home conducted by A Broadfoot Burial at Eureka Center Cemetery
At the Catholic church in Wiota on Tuesday April 27 1909 John H Schaake and Mary A Stager both of this city were married by Rev Father McAlister in the presence of a few intimate friends. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Stager and a worthy young lady. John has lived in Anita all his life and many friends wish them well.
The Tribune reports Mr and Mrs Charles S Baker recently moved to a farm near Armour South Dakota whose infant child has been dangerously ill for weeks. The baby lies in a critical condition at the M E Hospital in Omaha with little hope of recovery as per the attending physician. Neighbors and friends in the area share the sorrow.
On Dollie Rickel fourteenth birthday April 22, friends hosted a delightful surprise at eight pm. Guests included Eva Gochanour Vernie Smith Ethel Parker Stella Benham Verna Gochanour Dollie Rickel Ruby White Gladys Rickel Maude Scholl Florence Rickel Mrs P A Rickel and J P Jones. After games and music light refreshments ended the visit with birthday wishes. Also noted is an advertisement for seed corn sale offering Yellow Dent Pride of the North and White Corn by O D Aldrich.
A Minnesota letter from Vesta notes a $1.50 subscription renewal to Anita Tribune with a change of address to Wood Lake. It recalls a cold spring, seeding efforts, and a January blizzard with limited livestock losses, plus a hog loss and recovery after snow melt. It reports six-foot snow banks, dry fields, an eight month school term ending, and first grade pay from $5 to $55 per month.
W. K. Carey of Anita Iowa presented a pair of seal-brown horses weighing 3490 pounds that sold to Bown & Mc Cullough of Hast Buffalo New York for 680.00. Yet general prices for commercial drafters range from 175.00 to 215.00.
The Des Moines Capital notes Elias Hoxie has forty four years with the Chicago Milwaukee and Saint Paul railway and currently serves as conductor between Mc Gregor and Sanborn. He is the oldest man in the company west of the Mississippi in service, with only two others longer employed on the system. Troxie is his brother in law to E A Stone of this city.
The Libel case filed by T. B. Larrabee against Sherm F. Myers editor of the Tribune, claiming 25000 dollars for damage to character, has been dismissed in district court after two years of continuances. A parallel suit by Walter Haynes ended with a verdict for Myers, showing no libel occurred. The closing chapter follows a long, contested effort viewed as a bluff by some.
G W Mallory and W P Swolley engaged in three rounds of blows over a disputed veracity matter. They exchanged mutual promises to show the Missouri plan later. Judge Sears saw fit to assess the regular license amid the public exhibition.
Rev M Stahl announces the engagement of his daughter Miss Clara Grace Stahl to Mr Wm Paulsen of Rock Island Illinois. Marriage set for late May at Rev Stahl s Altoona home where he pastors the M E church. Friends in Anita join the Tribune in best wishes for the couple. Miss Laura Millhollen spent Sunday at home after teaching near Wiota.
