Tome Brooks of Des Moines will assume operations of the ia Theatre, moving from Anita where he has run the picture show circuit for three years. Residents welcome Mr. Brooks and wish him success. A dinner party was hosted by Mr and Mrs Rollin King.
The Senior Class Play titled Dear Papa, a 3 Act Comedy directed by Mrs Ella Biggs, is at the school auditorium Friday evening April 23. The 17 member cast will entertain with between acts musical numbers and an pre show by the band. Attend if you can for a pleasant evening.
State Highway Commission favors widening all paved primary Iowa roads to 22 feet with safe shoulders. Fort Dodge advocate J oe Roderick, vice president of the Iowa State Patrol Club, praises the plan as a step toward four lane highways and safer bridges and building. Local figures note past funding and navigation of 1946 Anita school graduate connections.
Mr and Mrs B Charles Robison hosted a family Sunday at their home in honor of their daughter’s birthday. Relatives from Edmonton and Newton attended though Mrs Littleton was away with her child recovering from measles. The visit included photos and a relaxing afternoon before travel to California.
The Anléd Pythian Sisters met Monday evening at the local Temple with 27 members present. Plans were announced for a School of Instruction at the next meeting, with sessions at 1 PM and 1:30 PM. A Silver Tea was proposed for Saturday May 8 in honor of Mothers Day, to be followed by a lunch served by Mesdames Paul Kelloway Ted Walker and Merlyn Naszard.
In Anita Iowa 83 year old Claussen is hospitalized after a fall and illness. Albert Fred and families from Anita visited him recently while the family reportedly reconciles past family tensions with a Cedar Falls branch nearby.
Mrs George Wise and other local residents attended the Southwest Association of Congregational Christian Churches meeting in Tabor Iowa on Tuesday. Mrs Williams presided at the afternoon session and local delegates included Mrs Chadwick and Mrs Hofmeister who were elected district officers. Miss Vera Hook was chosen secretary and Max Biggs noted for helping his mother in Des Moines, where he has heart congestion. Miss Hook also named delegate and Mrs Raymond the district alternate. While in Des Moines Mrs Biggs attended the KRNT theater show Ladies Be Seated.
Mr Eldon Gaylord opens a Plumbing and Heating Shop in Atlantic at the 1st door east of Rogers Barber Shop. He employs six experienced men in plumbing heating farm water systems shallow well supplies and related services. See advertisement on Page 2.
Eleven teachers including Superintendent D. Littell have signed contracts for the coming year. The board approved salary raises of 200 dollars per teacher and a 180 day year excluding holidays. Resignations accepted include Coach Donald Lynch and 2nd grade teacher Margery Martin.
Maureen McDermott from Anita earned a division two rating in the state speech contest held in Boone on April 17. Her dramatic reading titled Number Six was among seven contestants in her division. only two division two level winners were recorded. Sup t Lutrell, Mrs McDermott, Sue Woodruff and Margaret Shaffer accompanied Maureen to the event. coach Mrs W T Biggs could not attend.
The Rev R O Barber of Dodge Memorial Congregational Church was elected president of the Ministerial Association succeeding the Rev F Howard of the Gethsemane Presbyterian Church. Meeting notes from Des Moines include members and visitors, roll call, a door prize, and a lunch. May 12th is noted for an upcoming event.
Towa is named one of three midwestern states with honorable mention in the 1947 national traffic safety contest by the National Safety Council. The midwestern group includes 12 states, while Dubuque earned national honors for cities in the 25,000 to 50,000 population group. The council originally listed Dubuque second to Oak Ridge, but later awarded first to Dubuque and gave Oak Ridge a special citation.
Trailing this week’s funeral honors, Harvey Fletcher and wife Mary Pollock announce the new owners of the Anita Gamble Store. The remodeled, modern outlet near The Golden Rule corner will open Friday and Saturday April 23 and 24 with low prices and complete houseware, tools, auto, sporting goods and Coronado appliances. Fletcher served in the Pacific theater. other locals tout the store’s deluxe fittings and service.
Nick Ehrmann celebrated his 87th birthday Sunday evening with a card party at his Anita home. Relatives and friends gathered, with Miss Susie and Dillie Ehrmann of Viola hosting and refreshments served after the games. Ehrmann, born April 18 1860 in Peru Iowa, came to the Anita area with his mother, never married, and lived with relatives in Anita and Wiota before settling with his sister Mrs George Renshaw until her death.
Mrs. Alfred Dement entertained 13 children Saturday afternoon for her niece Kay Taylor of Des Moines who had been visiting relatives in Anita. The youngsters played games and had refreshments. Kay Taylor was accompanied by her uncle Joy Breen and returned to Des Moines Sunday.
A Sunday birthday gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rowley Pollock celebrated several recent birthdays. Guests included Maurice Oden, Bernard Moon and their son Ronald from Atlantic, plus Pollock sons Billy and Rowley Jr. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Robinson and Mrs. Kathryn De Camp of Anita who traveled to Des Moines for the Sport Show.
Funeral services for Fred Hansen 88 a former Anita resident were held at the Long funeral home with Rev Harold Butta pastor of the Methodist church in charge Music by Meadathes Hayes Redburn and George Smither with Mrs Raymond Lante at the piano They sang God Will Take Care of You and Safe In The Arms of Jesus Pallbearers were O C Gippls Bernie Baylor Elmer Stonebreaker Fred Wohlleber John and William Schaake Burial was in Evergreen Comets Fred Hansen died at his granddaughter Eve Hunters home in Tulsa Oklahoma after living with her for about four years He was born November 19 1859 and farmed around the Anita community He is survived by three sons William of Atlantic Dale of Moline II and Edward of Oscela Iowa
Mr and Mrs Glen A Roe spent the weekend in loyal County with their son Dr Jackson Roe and wife. They were accompanied by Mr Glen Steinmetz and wife. Mr Steinmetz went to University hospital Monday afternoon for major surgery and is doing well. Mrs Steinmetz returned home Wednesday morning. The Congregational Church dinner held by the Women’s Fellowship at Jase Maursday attracted many attendees. A total of 78.45 dollars was raised from gate and parcel post, with 138 packages sent from eleven states to former members and friends.
