A Soviet bid to melt Russia’s crown jewels into farm equipment pits imperial gems against the needs of reconstruction. The sale includes the Imperial Crown of All the Russias, valued at 52 million dollars, the Alexandra coronet at 30 million, and the Orloff diamond among other treasures. Auction proceeds fund Russian rebuilding while a global buying rush sparks bids and counter bids between Anglo American groups and Paris firms. The first sale netted 2.92 million, with the Bolshevik treasury gaining 305 thousand more due to competitive bidding. The government continues to stage public displays as profits rise.
