State Takes Over South Anita Road

The Anita Massena road becomes part of the state primary road system after years of local effort and boosters. Supervisors Metz and Wohlenhaus helped push the project, which will soon bear highway signs with the number 148 and be maintained by the state highway commission though a surface date is not yet set.

Achievement Day Held in Atlantic by Farm Women

Atlantic hosts Farm Women Achievement Day at the Methodist church. Mrs. Lucile Cochran of the Iowa State College extension service judged eleven exhibits as excellent. Massena township led scores with over 1,000 points. Edna township close behind with 936. Edna and Massena exhibits were top for educational value. Mrs. Raymond Sayre spoke on Looking Ahead. Fifty-one women participated. 14 earned perfect scores. The event featured a county farm women's chorus, a noon luncheon, and a tea service.

Quintupland Highlites Dionnes at Rialto feature

The Dionne quintuplets star in Quintupland a RKO featurette shown Saturday and Sunday at the Rialto Theatre. John A. Cooper Dies at 82 in Adair County

John A. Cooper 82 of Anita area died Friday at his home after a short illness. Born April 3, 1856 in Moberly Missouri he moved to the community in 1881. Surviving are wife Elizabeth Bell Duff a son James W. Cooper and three daughters Laura Tiggs Barbara Kinniard Effie Bean and a brother William I. Cooper. Funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at the family farm with Rev. J M Deberg officiating burial in Sunny Hill Cemetery Adair.

Anita Girl Wins County Spelling Contest Saturday

Gretchen Daughenbaugh, 12, daughter of Mr and Mrs Carmel Daughenbaugh, won both the oral and written county spelling contests in Atlantic last Saturday afternoon. The seventh grader trained by Miss Christina Hollen with help from B D Forshay, has helped Anita schools win county medals in ten of thirteen years. Gretchen will represent Cass county at the Des Moines Register contest on April 23 and the interstate contest in Council Bluffs on April 29.

Mrs Ellen Howlett 90 Dies at Home in Anita

Mrs Ellen Howlett aged 90 widow of Samuel Howlett died at her home in South Anita at 9 30 last Wednesday evening from complications of old age and small pox. Born in Rockford Illinois in 1847 she moved to Cass county as a child and helped build the region witnessing its growth from prairie to farm and highway. Survived by two daughters Mrs Cora Armstrong and Mrs Dora Edwards Anita and Ross Howlett Clarinda, plus a sister and brother Mrs Alta Pratt and Grant Brown Anita. Interment in Evergreen cemetery with Rev D B S Prather officiating.

Rock Island Buys White Line Rights in Freight Road

The Interstate Commerce Commission approved Rock Island Motor Transit Co. purchase of most rights and property of White Line Motor Freight and White Line Trucking for 59000. Rock Island plans Chicago to Omaha service with two Iowa branch routes, abandoning other White Line rights. White Line Transfer and Storage Co. remains unaffected. Anita school board requires personal applications for next year teaching jobs amid expected staff changes.

Anita Mayor Gets $10 A Month In Anita

The old town council voted unanimously to grant the mayor a salary of ten dollars monthly. The measure, introduced by Alfred Dement, notes Anita was among the few towns without a mayoral salary. The oath of office was given to Mayor-elect C. F. Darrow, who then administered oaths to councilmen and the park commissioner. Other officers kept or adjusted salaries, with debts and housing arrangements noted. Chas Workman, longtime Anita resident, died at his home Wednesday.

Organize Local Unit For the Control of Cancer

Fourteen Anita women met at Mrs. R I Needles home to organize a local unit of the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Needles spoke on early cancer symptoms and outlined a membership drive ending April 30. Attendees represented various local clubs and societies including the Anita Literary Club, P T A, Congregational and Methodist groups, Rebekah lodge, Loyal Circle, K J A club, Rose Hill and East/West Neighborhood Circles, Legion Auxiliary, and the Eastern Star chapter.
