A jumble of reminiscences and local notes recounts the Easter Coloring contest for children, memories of school and college figures, and the press life. References include Anita school first graders, Farmers Night talks, a horticultural scientist, and charity publicity limits proposed by a Mascoutah publisher.
Eugene D. Brocker reports Anita town drive is $50 to $60 short of its $375 quota for the year. Most funds come from the business district as organizers contact employees and firms. Brocker hopes to raise the remaining amount within a week without a house to house canvass. Contributions are urged at 793 Main St. Town and Country Insurance Agency.
Anita grade school students directed by Miss Katherine Blanchard will perform the operetta Puddin' Head at 8 PM next Wednesday April 9 Admission 50 30 and 20 cents with proceeds to Bend fund Cast includes John Pearson and Patricia Miller as the King and Queen Jeri Millard as Jester Lynn Robison as Marianne Richard Woods Larry Ray and Gene Karstens as the Royal Council Richard Lindblom as Toby Turnkey and Kay Johnson as Dame Woodenshoes
Anita School board at a March 31 special meeting voted to add supervision of the summer playground program to a coach hired this year. Four new teachers are needed due to resignations and enrollment growth. the board also named a sixth grade instructor to address increased next fall. The faculty will include Mortensen, Krotz, Knowlton, Miller, Salmon, Brown, McDermott, Collins, Dressler, Blanchard, Biges, Salmon, and principal Salmon with Supt. Fatka.
Mrs Stella Musick of Cownril Bluffs spent last weekend as a guest of Mrs Hattie Wiese.
The 1952 Cancer drive in Anita will be sponsored by the Junior Women's Federated Club. From April 1 to 15 volunteers will contact nearly every household, avoiding calls on business houses. If residents are away, donations may be left at Anita State Bank. Plans for Recreation Area development are being prepared with details to follow.
Mike Mardesen owner of Mardesen Paint and Wallpaper Store purchases the Anita Hatchery Building at 752 Main St in a deal completed on April 1. Cement Realty handled the transaction. Mardesen plans extensive remodeling and redecorating of the building.
Supt. W. W. Fatka reports federal hot lunch funds will be exhausted April 30, ending subsidy. The hot lunch program will run to year’s end without price increase, aided by PTA cooperation and the summer canning program. A recreation area potato patch helps, with plans for a larger patch this summer.
A community Good Friday service will be held at the Anita Methodist Church from 2 to 3 P.M. on Good Friday afternoon with participation from the Church of Christ Congregational and Methodist churches. Rev Dessie Masker J Milton Kinney Rev Derry and C L Thomas will share themes from Christs Words From the Cross. Youth from the three churches will form the choir.
Anita merchants promote Gold Tag Day sales with a three day fair, inviting shoppers to Anita Tribune ads and local stores to wear Gold Tags. Keith Chadwick invites farmers to Chadwick Implement Co. on April 9 to view Case tractors with new One Minute Eagle Hitch live power take-off hydraulic control. Free coffee doughnuts offered and door prize registrations available.
The 10 percent additional charge on orders of 50 or more postcards was removed Saturday allowing any quantity to be bought at the base 2 cent rate. The change simplifies pricing and expands options for bulk buyers.
Raymond Lantz of Kohl and Lantz grocery notes Briardale stores across Iowa Missouri and Minnesota mark the fortieth anniversary of Grocers Wholesale Cooperative Inc known as GWC. Organized in Des Moines in March 1912 by seven merchants to build a state wide wholesale supply force amid new competition.
The Anita Municipal Utilities office entrance received an improved look this week with an attractive asphalt tile floor covering. The new inlaid design features the words Anita Municipal Utilities in contrasting colors, enhancing its appearance.
The Haszard Oil company station on Main Street lost its canopy last week and gained a new drive island. Crews lathed and plastered the front, planned paint for the main building and wash house, and will gravel the area between the buildings. Shop “Gold Tag” specials.
Anita merchants and the Anita Tribune sponsor a $25 cash prize Easter coloring contest for children in two age groups. Ten pictures invite coloring with pencils paints or crayons and must be brought to the sponsoring business by April 12. Each entry needs child name and age on back. up to four prizes per person with two first and two second prizes across groups. Winners announced in the Tribune after Easter.
Anita Spartans dropped the season opener 18 to 10 on a cold windy day. They led 4 to 0 before wild pitching by Bissell and Harris allowed 11 unearned runs. If weather stays dry, the team will travel to Adair for a 2:30 P.M. Thursday game. Rathman Parkinson and Bissell led the hitters with mixed results.
On Monday April 7, Anita and many Iowa towns will install councilmen and officers elected last fall for a short term to shift to a calendar year. New Anita councilmen are Glenn Haszard Les Eddy Carl Moore Wilbur Matthews and Ivor Sheets. Treasurer Ben McLuen Mayor Alfred Dement and park commissioner Jack Long were reelected and begin new terms Monday.
The matinee and evening shows of It's A Frame-Up, directed by Mrs Ella Biggs, drew praise and about $200. Funds will cover graduation gown rental and a school gift, like the Venetian blinds installed in the library.
Robert Creanger aged 20 and Betty Jean Fletcher aged 14, both of Des Moines, obtain marriage licenses. Marjorie Jean Brindley 21 of Anita weds Oscar L. Mikkelsen 27 of Anita. Alfred Gilbert Williams 32 of Atlantic weds Virginia Pauline Petersen of Atlantic with license issued.
According to Dr. A. D. Bell, 174 schoolchildren received the first in a series of three diphtheria whooping cough tetanus shots sponsored by Anita School and the Town Department of Health. Supt. W. W. Fatka notes 8 from rural schools, the rest from Anita. Smallpox immunization now scheduled for Friday April 4, not April 25 as previously announced.
