Spring Band Concert Friday at Anita Community High
The Anita Community High band performs Friday evening April 3 in the new school gym at 8 p m under conductor Zugene Frimble. Selections span popular and classical pieces with solos by Danice Amerman Joe Nelson and John Walk. Twenty four students aim for state contests on April 10 and 21 in sand small ensembles. The band will not enter the state contest this year. Off ICers installed by Alpha Omicron chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at the State University Town Nancy Walker will serve as treasurer during spring and fall terms.

Jim Stapleton was named president of the Anita Booster Club at a brief meeting following the annual Athletic Banquet at Anita Elementary. Pete Knowlton became vice president and Russea son was secretary-treasurer. Officers prior year included Don Schaaf, Jim Stapleton, and Ben McLuen. Banquet drew about 150 guests and honored football, basketball, track, wrestling, and cheer squad members.

Ruggles Grocery in Anita Closes After 19 Years
Ruggles Corner Grocery has suspended operations after 19 years. The store, a long time Anita landmark, began as Lattig Bros. then Lattig-Crawford, later run by William Crawford, and finally by Edward Ruggles who left to study and work in Chicago. The Ruggles family will remain in Anita. Local residents, including Harold Toepfer and relatives in Lewis and Alaska quake zone, are assisting with communications via ham radio and Red Cross mail efforts.

The annual Anita kindergarten roundup will be held Monday and Tuesday April 6 and 7 from 9 30 to 10 30 a m at the elementary building. English Teacher Hired Here in Anita School
Miss Judith Jordan of Rolfe, a spring graduate of State University in Ames, has been hired by the Anita Board of Education as English instructor for Anita Community School. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Jordan and granddaughter of the Warren Jordans of Wiata. Mrs Ruby McDermott, math instructor, retires from full time teaching but will return as librarian half time. A science math instructor will be hired to fill McDermott’s math post and also teach in the science department. The football coach vacancy remains unfilled.

Tragic fire claims life of Gail Brown at Bruce Brown farm
Gail Brown four died from heat inhalation after a nonfatal blaze at the Bruce Brown farm southeast of Anita. His brothers Mark twelve and cousin Ned thirteen survived with severe burns. The accident occurred when three boys climbed a cone shaped metal dust collector and caused a flare up. Gail died about 2 30 am while Ned and Mark recovered to face a long rehabilitation. Funeral held at Gospel Chapel Atlantic with burial in Eureka Two Cemetery.

4 H Group To Sell County Plat Maps In Anita Saturday
4 H members in Cass County participate in a citizenship short course at the national 4 H center from June 29 to July 4 and will sell plat maps in Anita on Saturday April 4 at the Excon a Wash to raise funds for the Washington D C trip. The maps aid locating potential farms for promotion and solicitation by farmers tenants and business people.

Death of Harry Cate Shocks Anita Community
The Tribune reports the death of Harry H. Cate on March 13 in Los Angeles after a long illness. Burial by cremation followed on March 16. Survived by two sons, Harry H. of Chicago and Edwin A. of Omaha. Former Anita postmaster from 1915, renowned as the “Happiness Philosopher,” he visited Anita yearly until last year and was active in Knights of Pythias. Also notes his early life, tailoring shop, and affection for Anita as his home town.
