A nostalgic reminiscence describes April Fool antics and a road trip era. The narrator recalls giving rides to service members, a loyal police dog, and past roadside kindness while noting wary hitchhiker caution and a shared sense of humanity during spring travel.
The Cass County Rural Youth Project ranks first in district nine for new members and receives a state award at the Ames assembly on March 19, 2021, for outstanding service. Clifford Christensen of Atlantic serves as district representative on the Iowa State Rural Young People’s Board. Presidents over the year were Dale Rowck, Gene King, and Dick Nichols. A record 550 youths attended the state R Y P meeting themed Molding Our Future.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Anna Mae Bear in Belle Plaine with burial at Oak Hill. The AHS senior class play No More Homework is set for April 2 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym with a large cast led by Elinor Garside and Nancy Wehrman.
Harley McDaniel accepts offer to coach both boys and girls basketball at Anita for next year. He previously coached the girls and assisted with boys football and basketball. Anita will host a large music event April 9 and 10 with about 1000 students from 34 schools in a preliminary contest.
Old Man Winter delivered a final blast across Iowa including Anita. Temperatures fell sharply on Sunday with high winds. Snow fell Sunday night and Monday morning to about two inches in Anita. Tuesday brought slushy Main Street traffic and by Wednesday conditions dried but still substantial snow on the ground.
Jack Reed has purchased the residence of Mrs. C. W. Shaffer on East Main Street with possession expected soon.
The Rev C L Thomas marked his 83rd birthday Sunday with evening callers including daughter and husband Mr and Mrs Cecil Taylor and Pete Knowlton and family Oulie Taylor of Anita and Mr and Mrs Keith Taylor of Fontanelle The Nicklas Bitners of Extra visited Sunday March 21 with the Elton Christensens and Earl Heaths.
The Anita board of education offered a contract to Tuenis Tait as football coach for next year. He will be head football coach and teach safety education and run recreation programs after coaching at Knoxville High School. He holds a BA from Town State Teachers College and an MA from Colorado State.
Mr and Mrs Lee Duff of Water loo are the parents of a son, David Lee, born March 24 in a Waterloo hospital. He weighed 6 pounds 14 7/8 ounces. He is the couple’s second child. Paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Robert Duff of near Anita visited last weekend and brought 22 month old Toan Kay for a visit of a few weeks. Thomas Christensen, stationed seven months in Göppingen Germany, has been promoted to private first class. Sgt and Mrs Billie Hyndman of Fort Hood Texas arrived March 23 for a 10 day furlough with the Ross Hyndmans and Ray Kleavers.
Members of the Anita Federated Women's Club will lead this year's Cancer Fund Drive in Anita. They plan to start soliciting in the business district soon as part of a local fundraising effort.
Anita school board on March 15 approved 190 teaching days up from 180 for next year. The additional days cover preyear meeting days and holidays plus two year-end days for admin tasks and weather-related closures, with up to five bereavement leave days allowed beyond state sick leave.

Cement Implement Co held an open house in a Farm Day event last week featuring new machinery and movie showings. About 200 attendees enjoyed 50 dozen doughnuts and coffee while 21 door prizes were awarded including a Farmall tractor cycle, grease guns, oil, batteries, a freezer kit, and spray products to named winners.
