California land settlement scheme shows model rural community
The California state land settlement program at Durham in Butte County began in 1918 on 6219 acres, subdividing land into two to 150 acre farms. It provides 120 families with homes, loans, and expert guidance to create a cooperative community centered on farming, livestock, and shared services, funded by a $260,000 revolving fund and later state support.
