Fire blight devastates orchards across the county
The article warns that fire blight has appeared in nearly every orchard visited. Caused by a bacteria living between bark and wood, it cannot be sprayed away and requires cutting out infected wood eight to ten inches below any dead tissue. Disinfect pruning shears after each cut, with formaldehyde or corrosive sublimate. Pear trees suffer more than apples, especially Jonathans, yellow transparents, and crabs.
