Alfalfa Hay Crop Yields Versus Oats On Farms Stated
A North Dakota Agricultural College study finds 1 acre of alfalfa can rival multiple acres of oats for feeding value, with 4,000 pounds of alfalfa equivalent to 3,520 pounds of oats. Minnesota dairy region data show alfalfa yields of about 2.55 tons per acre vs 2,712 pounds of oats per acre. The report advises mixed feeding and notes alfalfa’s high protein boosts milk and butterfat, while oats offer higher per-pound feeding value. It also recommends crushed oats with ground corn as a low-cost base ration.
