Iowa farmers plan 5000 new silos to boost silage output
Extension authorities from Iowa State College report plans for about 5,000 additional silos this summer, adding roughly one billion pounds of silage. With hay at $15 a ton, silage fed with corn could be worth $6 a ton, equating to about $3 million in extra value and enough to feed 200,000 beef cattle or 100,000 dairy cattle in winter. Including prior silos, Iowa could reach 28,000 silos, conserving 2.8 million tons of silage worth around $16.8 million.
