Prospecting for Coal Echoes in Anita History
In the eighties Anita businessmen funded coal prospecting on Turkey Creek bottom east of Anita and south of Evergreen Cemetery. C. J. Hume of Des Moines drilled to one hundred feet finding slate but no coal, funds exhausted and the venture ended in discouragement. Edwin Cate led the effort alongside local supporters. Taxpayers League Meeting At Unique Theatre
The Cass County Taxpayers League held a well attended session at the Unique Theatre Friday. Louis H Cook of Town Homestead spoke on current issues while Ed L Newton State Senator Julius A Nelson and others discussed taxation highway improvement and bond issues. A unanimous resolution pledges citizens to actively shape public affairs and ensure representatives reflect majority views.

Uncle Sam Cooper Celebrates 83rd Birthday in City
A community gathering at the Cooper home honored Uncle Sam F. Cooper, an 83 year old Civil War veteran from Missouri. At Meade Post No. 50 G. A. R. annual meeting he was elected Post Commander and attended by friends including the Stolls, Kelley, Kohl, Peterson, Dunham families, and Aunt Mattie.

Farm Bureau elects Milford President in tight county race
At the Cass county Farm Bureau annual meeting in Atlantic D E Milford of Pymosa township won the presidency over State Senator Julius A Nelson by 143 to 51. Officers chosen include Hugh L Walker C H Van Vinck Leon G Voorhees and E H Cunningham spoke alongside Louis H Cook and Margaret McNamara died at 92. A large fire destroyed the barn of Robert Perrin Massena including mules cattle hogs grain hay wagons and equipment.

Sister of Ringsted Woman Seeks Help in Illness
Mrs A R Robinson traveled to Ringsted Iowa last week to be with her sister Miss Clara Stacy who formerly lived here with Dr and Mrs H Campbell. Stacy underwent an operation two weeks ago and another may be needed to relieve her condition. Mrs Robinson will stay with her sister indefinitely.

New Year Church Activities at Long Congregational
Pastor A A Robertson invites members to a busy week of church events starting with junior and senior choir meetings on Wednesday evening. Officers gather Thursday at 7 30 pm, Women’s Missionary Society meets Friday at 2 30 pm, and Sunday School begins at 10 am followed by preaching and communion. Junior Endeavor and Young People meet in afternoon and evening, with annual church meeting on January 11.

German Descent Farmers Bring Goose Meat Curing Craft
In Kellogg area of Jasper county a group of German descent farmers cure geese similarly to hams and side meat. Birds are fully dressed salted, brined, smoked, bagged in paper, and hung. This meat is prepared for summer use.
