Local items report residents traveling to Asheville Hendersonville Detroit and Savannah and trips to Loundesville Chase City Hamlet and Norfolk. Andrews News doubles circulation and Andrews Public School reports its largest enrollment as compulsory school law enforces fines for absentees.
Irby and Thompson extend gratitude to patrons and friends for five years of liberal patronage at the Old Warehouse. They announce plans to continue serving planters next year and beyond, expressing sincere appreciation and farewell for the season.
In South Carolina on September 10 E C Mann of St Matthews is elected to fill the Seventh District seat left by A F Lever and P H Stoll of Kingstree wins the Sixth District seat after Ragsdale's death. Final returns up to noon show Stoll leading Florence area by 104 votes with Sherwood carrying most counties.
Complete returns show Stoll 649, Sherwood 480 for congress. Free range cattle 548 favor, 584 against. Georgetown County narrowly approves the retrovision of the general stock law by 36 votes and expects improvement in conditions over time.
Election results are listed for Andrews Georgetown No 1 and No 2 with candidates Stoll Sherwood and Choppee in races labeled For Free Range. Vague fragments show tally notes and party alignment but readable details are limited.
Representative Byrnes of South Carolina urges the United States Railroad Administration to supply more railroad cars for cotton and cotton seed. He notes crowded platforms and scattered bales, warns of losses to cotton buyers and farmers if cars are not provided, and stresses seed rot prevention during the early market season.
Mrs Duke Patterson and J C McIntosh, both of Bennettsville, were visitors here last week.
Commissioner Harris advises farmers to plant winter oats with vetch from late September to mid October to ensure early growth and protection against cold. He notes high corn costs next year, urges open furrow sowing in the Piedmont belt, and recommends one and a half bushels per acre with top dressing by February.
Miss Lena Higbe visits Columbia while Mr. W G Copp from Conway moves his jewelry business to Andrews. Until the new building opens, Copp will operate from the News Book Store and urges readers to view his advertisement in this issue.
The American Cotton Association membership push in Lexington County gains momentum with hundreds of farmers and business men joining. The goal was 2,500 members in Lexington as Dr D M Crosson of Leesville heads to New Orleans for the cotton meeting on Monday and Tuesday.
Columbia discusses the 1919 cotton outlook with Commissioner Harris who criticizes official estimates and warns of a bear drive to push spot prices lower. He cites stagnant condition reports, predicts a large harvest but cautions against relying on board cotton and urges farmers to withhold from rush sales.
Lieut Malcom A Bateman aged 23 was killed in an airplane accident at Austin Texas Saturday afternoon He was the son of the late J F and Mrs Janie Bateman of Camden He served as an aero squadron commander in World War I and later taught at Kelly Field He was married in May to Mrs Nell Robertson of Savannah Ga and is survived by his mother one sister two younger brothers and other relatives He was a member of the Camden Methodist church the Masonic Order and the Woodmen of the World His father was killed two months earlier by moonshiners near Camden
Social notes recount a busy week for Andrews youth with multiple gatherings. A Monday chicken supper on the river drew about twenty-two couples under three chaperones. Tuesday featured a home dance hosted by Mr and Mrs W H Andrews. Wednesday hosted Frances Pegram at the Weatherford home with punch, games, and a salad course. Friday night Mrs Charlie Ashe hosted a truck ride for Miss Marion Stalker with eight couples, complete with jokes, songs, and candy.
The speaker urges farmers to sell cotton for the next thirty days as prices hover above thirty five cents. He cautions that if spot prices fall, the farmer bears the blame and none others.
Senator Hoke Smith of Georgia urged cotton farmers to hold their crop until prices rise, speaking to growers, factors, and bankers in New Orleans. He urged organized cooperation by counties, slow selling from October, and planting foodstuffs and cattle to meet demand, backing cooperative principles of the American Cotton Association.
Clemson College reports Cove crop campaigns in Newberry and Greenville counties with strong turnout and results. Newberry held six district meetings drawing 88 farmers. alfalfa and clover seed and lime were offered. Greenville campaign secured 11 000 pounds crimson clover seed for about 50 farmers, doubling clover planting in the county.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Baptist church hosts an open air festival at Main and Morgan Streets on Sept 24 at 7 30 PM to raise funds for the parsonage. Donations of fancy work handkerchiefs aprons cakes candies and other sale items are requested from church members and townspeople. Mrs J H White chairs the event and invites advance donations.
