The Georgetown chapter D A R reports on the A D R School with praise for public generosity and health, Santa Claus visits on December 22, and holiday routines. Volunteers arrange church services, planting, and a planned school expansion while noting cheerful, cooperative life and daily duties.
Georgetown residents share weekend visits with family and friends. Miss Dantzller and Mrs. Bomar attend a faculty event at Hemingway Graded School. Col. R. M. Barnes of Columbia visits. many attend tea despite bad weather. Mrs. Wilson Buie Jr hosts bridge with four tables. E. Mercer wins writing paper prize. Guests include Mabel Levy Barbara Levy Amelia Bourne and others. Travel plans show Mrs. Flowers visiting McClleansville and Palatka Florida. H L Oliver hosts visitors. Margaret Sp returns from Florence. more local names appear throughout.
Washington reports Senator Dial of South Carolina urges selling surplus low grade cotton left from wartime stocks. A Department of Commerce study concludes linters and low grade cotton cannot competitively replace jute in bagging, cement sacks, or seed meat sacks, limiting markets for such material.
B W Jayroe and H L Ellington were beaten by three sailors in their hotel room around 10 pm. Ellington suffered scalp lacerations and skull fracture while Jayroe had head wounds. Ellington lost about $40, later found to be 9 cents, Jayroe’s money largely intact. Both were taken to Roper Hospital and are reported to be recovering well. A black jack was alleged to be used.
Due to crowding the Methodist Church added five rooms at the rear to accommodate the growing Sunday School. The new spaces, completed last week, house 153 pupils with a goal of 250 by June as temporary accommodations ahead of a new church.
Reduction bill reports to the lower House trims overall state appropriations to 6,563,086.71 while lowering the levy from 12 12 mills to 11 mills and suspends the 2 mill highway levy for the year. The plan preserves essential items, with 84,000 for deaf and blind school improvements and 1,566,830 for the State Superintendent of Education, amid broad department cuts and a surge in Confederate veteran pensions. The highway department faces the largest proportional cut and several agencies see reduced requests from the governor’s recommendations.
A Sea board Air Line train collided with a switch engine four miles from Savannah. Flagman R. L. Wilson of Darlington was killed instantly. C. L. Ozier of Memphis is seriously injured, with and other thirteen passengers sustaining minor to moderate injuries. The injured were taken to Oglethorpe Hospital as officials plan an inquiry into the wreck.
The American Railway Express Company is erecting an express building on the Rosemary Street corner crossing the S A L mainline one block north of the depot. The 25 by 40 foot structure will be used for express storage and handling, with a small end-room for baggage and office space. Completion is expected by March 1, per H C Wofford.
Honor roll lists first through tenth grades with students including Lizzie Parsons Ila Thompson Ear nestine Moore Bazelle Gibson James Miller Keelan Thompson Golden Snails Lorrce Terry Sterling Parsons Flossie Mae Barrineau Anna McCants and others. A minstrel titled Mirandy's Minstrel will be performed at Earles Graded School Friday night February 11 1921.
The Mothers Club held its regular monthly meeting on February 4 with Mrs. Wv. W. Howle. Mrs. Weatherford discussed Kindergarten education and its advantages while educators’ selections were read. Attendees talked of the upcoming mayor and alderman election and many planned to vote. The next meeting is set for March 4 with Mrs. Tom Bellune at 4 p.m.
Andrews chapter of the Eastern Star will present The Old Maids Club at the Select Theatre next Tuesday February 15 at 7 30 p m. Local talent forms the cast and attendees are promised a delightful evening.
A number of ladies have registered on the Municipal registration books for the town election to be held Tuesday March 8. Women appear set to play an active role in choosing the next officers for Andrews. Two candidates for mayor are T. W. Bellone and F. F. Bell. Incumbent C. J. Levy is not seeking reelection. Six aldermen and one commissioner of public works will be elected. no candidates for these offices have been announced.
South Carolina division of the American Cotton Association asks all state organizations to back acreage cuts. Projections show a surplus of over 9,000,000 bales by August 1921 with near one year’s supply. The appeal urges farmers to plant no more than one third of cultivated land in cotton to avoid bankruptcy and financial disaster.
Thomas Woodham of Darlington County in Philadelphia section shot and killed Grover Martin after Martin fired at him near Lees Crossroads while Woodham faced a prior collision with Martin’s truck. Coroners found Woodham justified as Martin menaced his life. Woodham was treated for five bullet wounds and is recovering.
Mrs. H. B. Floyd of this city died Wednesday morning February 9 after several weeks illness. She was 28 or 29, the widow of H. B. Floyd and mother of three daughters and two sons. Funeral held at Baptist Church Wednesday at 4 p m with interment in city cemetery. Husband is ill in bed.
