A bustling week illustrated by a mix of characters and events fighting for attention. Teachers, students, politicians, and local groups joined oddities from fat steers to fast horses and uncatchable pigs as the town sought livelier days amid chatter of critics and civic life.
In Andrews four H club calf event a young girl clings to her steer after judging. She slips the halter, stays close, then falls into tears on the animal’s shoulder as the crowd notices the poignant parting.
Mothers and fathers swelled with nerves as a 4-H Calf contest winner was chosen. Judy Pinnell showed the grand champion calf while Dot Pinnell and Bill Pinnell struggled with tension and cigars. The judge’s decision ended a tense, well run event with praise for all involved.
A quip lists ten behaviors that ruin groups including skipping meetings arriving late criticizing leaders avoiding duties and hoarding dues. It notes shifting blame to others while doing little and discouraging new members.
Judy Pinnell, 15, shown Hereford calf weighing 965 pounds, captured grand champion and top price at 51 cents a pound as Commercial State Bank bought the winning calf. Berry Cox took reserve champion. other divisions saw Forrest Ann Guest lightweight win and Paul Pinnell reserve. Swine grand champion went to Craig Stackhouse. mare grand champion and horse overall to Jan Fisher.
Andrews Mustangs capitalized on an interception and a 57 yard drive to defeat the Brownfield Cubs 10 to 8. Roy Sparks kicked a 15 yard field goal and added a fourth down conversion and key plays in a tight defensive battle. Bobby Davis scored the Cub touchdown on a 30 yard run before a late 25 yard dash sealed Brownfield’s fate.
A week long revival opens this morning at the First Baptist Church running through October 7 with two services daily at 10 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. Evangelist Dr J B Leavell leads the revival with Dr Charles McLaughlin as music director.
The October term of district court will begin Monday with Judge Russell Austin presiding. Forty four petit jurors are summoned to appear at 9 30 a m Tuesday. Civil cases start Monday and criminal cases are slated for the fourth week. Names include Jesse A Yadon Bert L Griffith R B Jordan Otis Wright Jimmy Wilkins M B Winchester Glenn Wieser and many others.
Dr. Paul Hunsicker urged expanding energy to gain fitness at a day long teachers workshop. He defined fitness as a life free of disease with enough energy for a happy life and stressed early value, noting improvement is possible at any age. He said exercise makes people more attractive and led sessions for teachers and coaches with university ties.
Last minute touches completed as the 50 bed Andrews Convalescent Hospital prepares to open with an open house this afternoon from two to five. The remodeled building will operate as a licensed convalescent unit for the aged under a nine person staff and six owners. The facility opens for business Monday morning with visitors invited to tour the hospital and enjoy refreshments.
Nominations close October 10 for a contest by the Andrews chamber retail committee led by Kenneth Bales to name the friendliest man and woman employees. Twenty two new names, including Freda Ellis and Pete Alexander, entered this week with votes determining a $25 savings bond and plaque prizes. All nominees join the Andrews Courtesy Club.
