Mrs H M Nixon and her husband Hub were honored as special guests at a local reunion. The couple spent 35 years with Andrews schools guiding six children who all earned four year college degrees and teaching credentials, totaling 59 years connected to education on a pumper's salary.
Clower recalls watching his first college game at Mississippi State. Francis Tubb first saw the Andrews Mustangs in a game against Kermit, was hired Thursday by Supt. T. D. Hamilton, and coached them Friday night without having met the players. The Mustangs lost to Kermit.
President Jimmy Carter spoke in Virginia on Saturday for Henry Howell, urging voters to judge issues by merit. He recalled his 1976 victory and suggested his Texas support hinged on decontrol of natural gas and crude oil, then quipped about a long memory.
The Mighty Mustang Band Boosters sponsor a rummage sale at the civic center from 8 am to 6 pm Saturday to raise funds for Andrews school bands. Donations are welcome today at the civic center. A booster pickup truck assists with large items.
Commissioners discussed two county projects, the courthouse air conditioning renovation and the Andrews County Airport taxiway lighting. About 100000 budgeted for both, with plans to install 75 low intensity lights along the 4200 foot taxiway. bids to be accepted from Oct 6, with costs estimated at 16000 to 17000. The courthouse HVAC, budgeted at 80000, is farther from completion and may reuse much of the existing ductwork while replacing major cooling units. Also approved lowest bid for a new 5 ton 1978 pickup at 5443, and authorized staff to attend library and probation officer meetings and workshops.
Coach Tommy Watkins preaches a positive focus after a 25-0 win over Snyder. Levelland arrives with a 2-2 mark, plagued by fumbles, and may surprise with new plays. Mustang honors went to Mark Munsell, Weldon Jones, and Steve Kolb. Tim Dyson returned to defense after a knee. Joe Dan Barnes and others assess injuries ahead of the Levelland game.
Andrews citizens joined Gaines County and Hobbs New Mexico residents in a push to urge President Carter to intervene in Mennonite deportation issues. Campaigns spread through Seminole Seagraves Hobbs and Andrews led by local officials to send telegrams supporting Mennonites to stay in the United States amid immigration paperwork problems.
The heat wave continues across West Texas with Andrews County reporting 101 degrees at the airport on Monday. NWS forecasts show little relief this week with mid 90s to near 100s and no cold fronts in sight.
An election for a Zone 4 director of the Andrews Soil and Water Conservation District is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Soil Conservation Service office. Eligibility requires owning agricultural land in the zone, living in a county within the district, and being 21. Current board members and district purpose are listed, with authority to coordinate conservation programs and agreements.
Larry Smith won the News grid contest and a $20 prize for correctly predicting all 12 winners. He also forecast the Cowboys Giants game would total 47 points. the actual score was 41 to 21 with 62 total points. Brem won the $10 runnerup slot after a random draw among three tied runners up. Fourteen entrants missed only one game. Entries for next week are due at Aladdin Carpet by 5 p.m. Friday.
Francis Tubb former Andrews Mustangs coach 1943 1952 returned to Andrews for the 30 year class of 1947 reunion with 1945 1946 1949 guests. The event honored Tubb and teachers J Lee Smith M O Woolam and Russell Austin with awards and remarks. The group plans another reunion in 1980.
