The Andros county fifth annual fair starts today with a new community building praised for exhibits but lacking space for livestock and heavy refrigerators. Proposals include a cheap lean-to addition and a larger driveway to attract auto dealers and other exhibitors.
In the top 5 A spotlight Pecos hosts Kermit in a key district clash. Orlando Gutierrez and Rick Spinks duel as Pecos seeks home advantage after tough opponents while Kermit seeks to extend a 3 game 106 point run. Denver City visits McCamey as Monahans travels to Fort Stockton with all eyes on the leaders in a packed district schedule.
Hub Nixon will leave Friday for Waco to visit his two sons Ferrel and Jon Nixon who study there. He will also participate in this year’s Baylor team schedule and attend the Baylor Houston University football game at the new stadium dedication.
Andrews School Board awarded contracts Thursday for a new high school gym. Burford Construction of Dallas is low bidder for general work at 195 000 dollars. P C Mechanical Contractors of Lubbock won plumbing and heating at 24 208 dollars. Bud Nairn of Morton secured electrical work at 4 187 dollars. The gym seats 1400 and sits where the tennis courts once stood between the senior high and shop building.

The first bale of cotton grown and ginned in Andrews county for 1950 sold for 350 dollars to owner W. B. Goza at auction by Tom Jeffrey. The 400 pound bale was bought by Char ley Williams, manager of the Andrews Coop Gin, with remaining bids carrying 80 1 2 cents per pound as premiums.
Andrews Junior High routed Denver City 26 to 7 as Wright Green Chester and Huckabee scored touchdowns. Huckabee added a reception for a TD. Denver City fought back with a late fourth quarter score. Hobbs led Andrews B to a 58 to 12 win over the Denver City B squad.
The Golden Cranes visit the Mustang corral at 8 p m for a district 5 A battle. Crane led by Clark Presley Henry Cook and Bus Pendleton clash with Fort Stockton bound Mustangs missing Donn Floyd and injured players. The loser will likely finish last in the district.
Twenty nine lots in Andrews will be sold by sheriff under tax judgments. The sale runs 2 to 4 pm at the south entrance of the Andrews county courthouse. Listings include multiple lots across blocks 8 11 41 45 46 62 and the White Addition.
The Andrews Rodeo Association was reorganized at a mass meeting in the Commissioners Court room. Huckabee was named president Neeley secretary treasurer Black elected vice president. Dues set at 10 dollars with 2 dollars for calf feeding. A match roping event is planned between Walton Page and James Kenny. An arena has been built and a water well drilled near County Airport. Committees were formed to recruit members and solicit donations.
Raymond Alfred Young 74 died Monday in Crane Memorial Hospital after six years of illness. He came to Crane in 1927 and ran the first dairy, later a grocery, then stock farming in Midland. survived by wife Beulah and 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren. service at First Baptist Church Crane with Rev. Both Mustangs touchdown aces will miss the game against the Golden Cranes. Don Floyd is sidelined with a leg injury and Enoch Reid will not play due to a re injured wrist.
The Monahans crew visit Denver City next week and then travel to Kermit to face the Rough Kermit district contenders in back to back showdowns.
Twenty one candidates sponsored by local firms compete for the Harvest Queen title at the county fair. The Sub-Deb club runs the event with votes earned for merchandise purchases from Monday through Friday. Candidates will ride in a parade this morning on merchant sponsored floats and the queen will be crowned at 8 PM Saturday at the community building.
Two youths from Andrews Texas entered the Fort Sam Houston Reception Center today for processing. The inductees are Sam E. Lewis twenty two and Walter G Slack twenty one. Lewis attended Andrews High School and has two years eight months prior Air Force service and a brother Erskine Lewis in the Navy.
Anderson-Pricherd Oil Corporation and Stanolind Oil and Gas plan a 5 000 foot wildcat in Southeast Andrews County to test the lower Grayburg. No. 1 F-34 Falken location is 13 miles southeast of Andrews and 660 feet from section lines. Additional Stanolind Midland Farms drills include No. 2 U R A B and No. 3 K Falken among seven projected tests in the area. The program targets depths of 4 000 feet to test the Grayburg producing formation.
The county fair opens with a 10 a.m. parade featuring Seminole and Andrews high school bands two Girl Scout troops Rodeo Association riders and merchant floats. Events include a football game agriculture exhibits and club and commercial booths leading to a Saturday night crowning of the Harvest Queen with ribbons and prizes.

The Hal Lonis building on North Main street nears completion with about 12000 square feet of floor space. It will house a Mercury agency linked to a Humble service station operated by Hal Louis and Sharrix of Seminole, with W. M. Peoples running the Humble Station. A roof collapse last week sent three workers to the hospital with minor injuries.
Superintendent Thos D Hamilton said adult commercial courses may begin at Andrews Public Schools if 12 to 18 adults show interest. Summer sessions in typing shorthand and bookkeeping ran six weeks with Miss Lydia Kelley teaching. Courses would start soon with lessons two evenings weekly for 12 weeks at $10 per course. books loaned for typing, shorthand books required.
Four Andrews high school graduates join the United States Air Force. Shelby Wheelus, local recruiter for Midland and Andrews, reports Don Alldredge, Bob Turnage, Wayne Gilihan and Bobby Watkins will undergo final physicals and written tests at Abilene, then proceed to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio for eight weeks of basic training. After training they will be assigned to air force technical schools or permanent installations.
